Hello Honda Tech, i just recently bought a 1997 honda civic coupe. It is my first car and I was excited but now i am becoming a little nervous. So basically my question is the guy said that the car is straight piped and that it doesnt have a catalytic converter and that thats why it has a CEL. Anyways, I foolishly believed him and since he smogged the car and it passed, i could register it okay.

My serious question is if the car is straight piped, why is my car pretty quiet? it sounds like it has stock exhaust and it isnt loud at all? I searched and saw that striaght piped car are really loud but this is one just isnt that loud?

Any help please, the car is registered and insured okay, but I was just wondering what to do now.

It's quiet because it has a muffler. The cat is an emissions device.

Pull the CEL code and post it. Click the codes link in my signature.

 

Muffler quiets it down as does the cat to an extent. If it passed a sniffer test the cat is most likely still there, which is why it's quiet

 

is this a troll post? you didnt look under the car to see if it's a straight pipe?
