Default 99 Accord EX 2.3

Hello, I have noticed that my car has developed a knock. It only occurs when the engine is cold and goes away once warm. To me, it seems like it is knocking because it is not getting adequate oil. The sound seems to come from the timing belt side of the head. I was wondering if you all thought that using 5w-30 instead of 10w-30 oil would help since it only knocks when cold? The car is all original(except the obvious stuff like spark plugs) with about 313k miles lol.

Sound like you need to add more oil in your car so when checking make sure tou are in a flat surface

The dipstick shows full. I used to think it was low when I heard that, and for many years, that was the case. Now, It will do it even right after I change the oil and is full.

shouldn't you be using 5w20 anyway? maybe that was only specified on the '01-'02 F23. it would not make it worse. But really you should check for "glitter" in the oil pan which is a sign of accelerated wear and damage. If you have the tools and skills I would suggest dropping the oil pan and checking the rod journal clearances. If you don't, take it somewhere and have them troubleshoot.

just because the noise goes away when it warms up doesn't mean the problem goes away. different oil may help some, but it can't fix a worn bearing. if you can fix the cause of the knock you'll be much better off.

My manual says 10w30 and 5w30 for when it gets colder. I know the knock is not coming from the bottom end. I really think it may be something to do with my tensioner or something because thinking back, it has done that since I had Honda change my timing belt.

Also, when I change my oil, I do check to see if I notice any depris, such as "glitter". So far, it is doing fine.

Your engine was not built to run on ethanol fuel. Burning ethanol fuel continuously can damage various sensors and lower the lifespan on a number of different components.

sure it was. it was built to use fuels with up to 10% ethanol per the manual.

can you cite any sources or studies that back up your claim?
