Hey guys. So I have a 95 civic ex and just had my rear main seal replaced. When I picked up my car from the mechanic I got halfway home and noticed a noise coming from the front driver side. It is a metal on metal rubbing noise. I talked to the mechanic and he said it was probably the dust shield so I bent it away from the rotor a little bit for more clearance. The noise was still there. I took it to a reputable tire shop and they say the car needs new brakes all around. I looked at the pads and they looked about half left. I took the car back to the original mechanic and he looked at it now he is saying possibly a bad cv axle. Any ideas how to Check what exactly is causing the noise. I don't want to start throwing money at it hoping to fix it. Any half is appreciated

 

I remember having this problem. They guy said it was brake dust build up. But cleaning it didn't help in my situation. A few weeks later my master cylinder went out. But after that was fixed the grinding sound was gone.

 

I don't think it is the master cylinder since i just had it replaced with a brand new master cylinder only 2 weeks or so ago

 

Yeah maybe take the wheel off and try the brake cleaner?

I had this happen to me too and it was indeed something stuck between the rotor and the dust shield. It was a terrible metal scraping noise and I was like wtfffffffffffff is that?! Get a flashlight and try looking in-between the rotor and the shield to see if something is stuck in there. Long screwdriver will help too.

 

It's very easy to bend the wheel splash shield. When this happens, the shield can rub on the brake rotor. Use your hand to bend the shield away from the rotor.

 

Very true. Also... Just Pull your wheels off and do a visual inspection yourself. You should be able to see whatever is causing the noise.

 

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, I had a similar problem. Turned out it was the dust shield. However, I can tell you how NOT to check it.

1. DO: jack car up the wheel up and spin it by hand to pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

2. DON'T: Spin it by hand using the spokes of your aftermarket wheel to spin it around faster and faster and faster...until it's a blur, and your fingers get caught in the spokes and your 17lb spinning wheel takes your hand along for the ride...to the side of the brake caliper.

I realize that's a very specific "DON'T". There are...reasons. lol

Tore my finger up pretty good but didn't lose anything except blood and my fingernail. It got pretty smashed and eventually had to be taken off. :C

Anyway, I had a similar issue before, and it turned out that one of the metal clips that are between the brake pad bracket and the brake pad was damaged and was rubbing on the rotor. You may want to check these as well.

 

^probably not damage but rather the brake pad wear indicator

 

Pulled tons of rocks out from between dust Shields and rotors sometimes requiring the rotor to be removed.

OT: related to the guy who got his fingers in his wheel.....don't put your fingers near a running brake lathe either.....they peel you back like a sardine can

 

All this finger stuff is giving me the heeby jeebies.

 

Nope, pads were brand new and the indicator on the pad was where it was supposed to be. I am really talking about the metal clips that sit between the pad and the bracket.

... and yeah, my fingers hurt every time I open up this thread now.
