Default 99 Honda Accord V6 Grinding in reverse

I have a 99 Honda Accord v6, automatic. I went to drive home last night, put it in reserve, heard a click and then grinding. So now I have no reverse. It completely came out of nowhere, shifts fine in drive and drives fine going down the road. Check engine light was on before, just had code ran, says it was a Evap canister. Is my tranny junk? What do I do now? Tranny flush? Is it the solenoid? Help!!!

You have a binding/leaking reverse servo shaft or mechanical failure, remove the unit and inspect the damage. Generally this problem is found on larger cars, like the 3.5L Odyssey minivan and Pilot.

During teardown, you will most likely need given your information at least:

Reverse servo o-rings.
4-R selector collar.
Reverse gear.

At the worst:

new reverse servo valve body.
Servo shaft.
Plus all above items.

There is a shift kit available that restricts the 4-R clutch apply to reduce the wear seen on the reverse collar and gear. I have rebuilt close to 40 of these units.

It would be wise to rebuild what you have. These units have a lot of minor problems in my opinion, and it is best to deal with the problems you have in the current unit.

This.

Some trans have this problem, others have the 3rd gear problem, and others have the PRV problem. Or some combination of all. Stick with your original transmission at least you know what is wrong with it.
