i have a 96 gsr and it has a tapping noise coming from the engine and i cant go over 25 mph. you can feel it hit the valve cover and it seems like its the valves but what causes this problem. i had a guy fix the problem and it ran fine for one day then it came back again-wasted $500. he replaced the rocker arm and changed my main engine bearings. i do have after market products including dc headers and CAI and cams. but before the engine made the noise the check engine light came on and the code was for the o2 sensor and i just kept ressetting it(thought it was because of the headers and the CAI) can i get some help fellows-i would gladly appreciate it.

Did you advance your timing too much? Are you running 87 gas? Does it happen at night when the air is cold?

If you still have your stock stuff try to take out your mod and see if it is caused by the mod.

 

Actually I've always used the highest octane rating. The noise is constant when i first start it up till warm-no matter if day or night. I've noticed that my oil pressure light was coming on although i just changed the oil and filter a week a go. I never touched the timing and I think that maybe the problem. Can the timing be graduallly be offset due to engine problems. I would put the stock back in but i dont have them anymore.

 

you can feel something hit the valve cover???????? that sounds really bad man. did it just start out of no were or did you miss a shift and over rev?

 

how does the car idle? try doing a compression test

 

Tapping from the valve cover? You might need a valve adjustment.

 

Yes it does sound bas. I usually drive hard and I did get the CEL numerous times yet I figured I was just a faulty O2 sensor so I reset my ECU each time. The car starts up just fine and idles perfectly it does drive but I dont wanna risk blowing the whole engine. On Monday I will do a compression test and check my valves. Hopefully that'll work.
