Default 05 CRV P1009 and 83-1

Hey Guys,

I have an 05 CRV that just crossed 120,000 miles today. I have yet to do the 120k mile maintenance; I am up to date on all of my other maintenance though. Prior to crossing that threshold, however, my wife called me and said that it almost stalled at the stoplight, then the CEL and VSA light came on. She turned the car off, restarted it and the VSA went out but the CEL remained lit for another thirty miles then went out. Today, the CEL and VSA went off again on her way to class. When I got in the car today neither the CEL or VSA was on again. I took it to Advance Auto and there were three codes stored in the computer, two of them appeared to be the same:

I found a factory service bulletin for p1009 saying that the computer often erroneously displays the p1009, which requires an update of the software by Honda. The vehicle is still under warranty (CarMax 150k mile warranty) so any factory required work like this is covered. I spoke to a technician though, and he said to change the oil and put a Honda filter on there, then if the p1009 comes up again I should bring it in for them to look at.

The 83-1 I do not really understand though. A couple of places online said that I should not worry about the 83-1 because of the double code. I don't believe that, but I am also not having any problems with the car. It drives fine. In fact, I drove it to Advance and it felt fine.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Update: drove the car for a few days without anything happening. Gotta perform my maintenance this weekend, car is at 120.115. Wife took it a half mile up the road and the VSA MIL and traction control lights came on. She parked it in the parking lot and said it was revving up and down. She turned it off and then back on and the MIL stayed on but nothing else. Ideas, anyone?

Hello, did you ever figure out what this was. I think I’m having the same problem.

I have a 2005 CRV that I bought with seized valve that ping pong in cylinder 3. I inadvertently had a very low budget engine rebuild with a shade tree mechanic. P1009 has been a consistent code. I pulled the original VTech solenoid and found a lot of sediment and blockage on the screen. Cleaned and replaced. But p1009 code persists. So I replaced the VTech solenoid. I also discovered the rear spool valve screen was clogged. I cleaned it.

Now I just consistently have an intermittent p1009 code. Symptoms are revving high idle at approximately 1500 RPM and lugging with a thunk when accelerating out of corners. A very soft throttle input seems to avoid the issue. Sometimes idling at a stoplight the oil light will flicker on and off.

I have also checked the VTec solenoid screen. It was clean but the gasket is leaking. I will be replacing both at gasket and that on the spool valve. I know this. The idling issue seems to happen more while the engine is cold and in the process of warming up. Hopefully the issue is the gas kit is allowing oil to bypass and not fully engaging the vtec solenoid.

The mileage is approximately 120,000, mi. 190,000 km. The vehicle is not maintained well and does not look like it had regular oil changes.

Other things I have done include cleaning of fuel injectors with new micro screens, new spark plugs and a new air filter.

If replacing gaskets does not resolve issue (probably won't) then I will test vtech solenoid operation by connecting to battery directly and I will Look into a PCM flash with the dealership. I live in Mexico so I'm not sure if my local dealership can do it.

VTEC solenoid filter screen. Was clean but leaks.

Spool valve oil pressure sensor screen was clogged.

Vtech filter screen. Was clean.
