Default Bought a used '97 accord

Hi,

I have recently purchased a '97 white accord coupe and was wondering why the SRS light and the ABS light was always on. Is that normal in Accords? Thanks.

No, it's not normal. You must pull the codes from the computer. Slam on your brakes and see if they lock (look behind you first). I wouldn't recommend testing the airbags though...

definately not normal. Is/was the car modded?

Edit: at least for the ABS light, ABS has been deactivated by the computer. You have no anti-lock brakes right now. Be careful. I haven't checked yet, but I believe an SRS light would mean the same thing....deactivated SRS systems. No active airbags....

Congratualations! You have a car from 1985. I hope for your sake you didn't buy a salvage title.

I hope it didn't happen to you, but if it was in an accident, and nobody replaced the airbags, the SRS light will be lit. Hopefully that didnt happen to you, because airbags are friggen expensive.

I got the car checked out by my cousin. Turns out it was in an accident hitting the right side of the car. Which explains the reason the SRS and the ABS light is on etc.

Can you explain to me how to reset it? I mean when I start the engine the ABS light is not on but there is a sound that the engine makes but as soon as the ABS light turns on then the noise goes away. I dunno if that helps or not. Thanks.

your ABS reservior is empty. This is fore of the driver-side strut housing. Fill is with DOT 3 or 4 BRAKE fluid. This is not a fix. You will watch the fluid slowly leak out of the unit over 2 weeks; you have a leaking ABS unit which is an $800-1200 repair at the dealer. You'll have ABS action if the ABS light doesn't go on. However, if it does go on, and you've filled the reservior, there is air in the lines that needs to be bled. Light = ABS inactive. No light = ABS system active.

I hope ABS wasn't a bargining point for this car. If you think your up for fixing it yourself, run a search for "ABS" in this accord forum. Buy a good manual.
