89 HF Daily Driver Project **Image Alert**
'89 CRX HF
Mileage: XXX
Engine:
Transmission:
Goals:
Daily driver that will last another 15 years. Not necessarily stock/OEM, but not performance.
Strip to frame. Combat rust and leaks.
Undercoat.
Repaint exterior to a greyish and interior to a black or greyish.
Replace worn, broken, and/or rusted, parts.
This week I got started on stripping my '89 HF.
I was busy ripping parts out so I didn't take a lot of picture, besides the lighting in the garage doesn't make for great cellphone pictures.
I got the engine, transmission, most of the engine bay, and the front suspension out. Need to disconnect the steering, remove the bumper/fender, and brake system.
The most frustrating part so far was rusted six spline racing nuts on the wheels. I broke a 1/2 inch breaker bar trying to get them off. I broke down and bought an impact wrench, which is probably my new favorite tool for taking things apart. Wish I had started with the impact wrench.

What's the goal with this bad boy? I think the HF motors actually have a mild amount of demand. Some people really enjoy these cars for the fuel economy.
I spent a couple months looking before I found the CRX on Craigslist. Bought it the day after it posted. It's surprisingly hard to find a Honda that's close to stock. Even taking this one apart I can see the engine has been out. It was missing a motor mount and a transmission bolt.
I would rebuild the motor you have. If you are looking for a little bit more pep, the B18C5 is the go to motor. Definitely a little pricey if you want to get it completely rebuilt, but a fair share faster. You can also import low mile motors fairly easily (or purchase it from an importer at least).
I would do a lot of cleaning, motor overhaul, bushing replacement, suspension replacement (if needed/desired), and some new seats. You should be good for regular maintenance and daily driving after that.
