The brake pedal on my Accord is beginning to soften and has started to sometimes push a bit to the floor. Took it to 2 garages today and was told by both all looks fine but the master cylinder may be the issue with the pedal drop. No fluid leakage, pads, rotors, drums, and calipers look good.

One garage was going to charge $270 and the other $380 to replace it.
I have not worked on brakes before but from searching for a replacement part from Napa and Advance the part is around $60. Is this something that is so tricky I shouldnt attempt it?

This Accord has nearly 300k on it btw if it matters.

 

Don't get an Autozone Rebuilt one. Spend the extra ~$60 and get a new one from Honda. It should only be like $120 or so from like Majestic.

If you haven't done it before, I'd probably pay a shop. You need a flare-nut wrench and will need to properly bench bleed the MC, as well as bleed all of the lines to make sure there's no air in them.

Absolutely positively don't get Autozone or Oreilly.

My first autozone pickup had a stripped out sealing bolt and it was leaking out of that bolt as a result of being stripped and not torqued down. The second one I got to replace that was immediately leaking out of the pushrod.

I then went with oreilly which was also immediately leaking out of the pushrod.

I then went with Exedy which has been going strong for over 5000 miles now with no leaks and no issues.
