Relates to a 1997 CRV.

If your door will not open from the inside, make sure a black square retaining clip is intact holding the interior latch rod to the door, as crazy as that sounds. I did a lot of parts changing and head scratching, and in the end it was a $3 clip that was keeping the interior handle from engaging the door latch. Will post a pic of what I mean later...

Happened to me before. What a pain! But a relatively easy and cheap fix.

 

Yeah, the true fix is simple alright and cheap. Of course I went to the junk yard, pulled out an old actuator/rods, and went through the pain of installing all that in the car, when all I needed was this clip (DOH!) Many hours spent plus $20 for that part. But I learned a lot!
