Default Catalytic Converter 98 Honda CRV

What is the difference between the Catalytic Converter California and A regular Catalytic Converter for a 98 Honda CRV?

I live in CT. I don't understand why i'm being told I need one for California emissions that costs $ 300 and I have to order it

Can someone please help me?? The one in stock I found is $ 129.99 but the garage is saying NO.

I got mine replaced about 3 months ago and paid 240.00 for an aftermarket one ( magnaflow) and is CARB compliant, installed and tax included, but i live in CA. otherwise i wouldn't pay that much for a cat. converter. Just order it on line and install it yourself, 4 bolts and your done.
Now to answer the your question i asked the same question to the muffler guy and he said, 2 or 3 years ago cat. conv. in CA used to be one size fits all and now they are vehicle specific as far as fitment goes that's it.
Then i asked the smog guy the same thing, and he said there was no difference as far as performance.
Now as far as i understand New York has a similar law to CA. so if you are trying to replace it in N.Y. then that's the problem you are having.

Not sure if the page will load but, here is a good price on a 48 state legal cat:

RockAuto Parts Catalog[year_1994]=true&ck[mkt_US]=true&ck[mkt_EU]=false&ck[mkt_CA]=false&ck[mkt_MX]=false&ck[viewcurrency]=USD&ck[ID]=0&ck[idlist]=0&ck[PHP_SESSION_ID]=d3q53333b2m1ar6q35jm80hok5

Is your vehicle a California model? If so, they are required to install a CA cat in a CA vehicle. Not sure if you will get a code if a non CA cat is put on a CA vehicle. I think the cats from CA have more precious metals in them, thus more expensive.

If not a CA cat, look at rockauto for EASTERN CATALYTIC Part # 40770. While it does not have the quality of a factory original, it is not bad, descent quality, and bolted right up.

Don't forget the gasket for the rear of the cat and the doughnut gasket for the front. The install was easy and the price was right. The only thing I did different was remove (they broke when unbolting) the 3 bolts for the rear flange gasket and used stainless bolts and nuts for replacement. I also got a new bolt nut and spring kit for the front of the cat. All said and done, delivered and fixed with new hardware for under $150. It's been 3 months so far and no CEL anymore.

According to the website, only CA requires a special cat and/or New York if it is a CA vehicle, so I am not sure why someone told you that you need a CA cat? Good luck, YD

Although my state (NJ) has CA emission standards I didn't worry about getting a CA-approved cat when I replaced mine five years ago. The reason being the standard and CA cats had the same part # when the '98's were built so they used the same cat in every vehicle sold in the US at one time.

I got mine from a respected ebay seller which specializes in cats and I'm still using in to this day without any issues. I only paid around $115 shipped and I've never had any problems when it was time to get inspected.

In short: Since you don't live in CA then save your money and get the standard cat.
