Also the whirring noise could be the AC pulley that is on it's way out. I had this issue on my other civic and it was a royal pain in the **** to get it back in. I would drive me crazy when driving around due to that annoying whine lol.

Sounds more like the alternator is seized on its crank. Your car isn't making voltage to run its systems. By the way, the engine in your car is the same as the North American Si engine, the K20 Z3.

Anyways, get your alternator looked at, and if required, replaced.

See you on CivInfo maybe?!! Cheers.

Shouldn't be too bad. You get a refund of sorts from the old alternator as it can be remanufactured at certain shops.

Most likely around £90-100 for the new unit.

Someone said it could be the vtec? I'm so confused as it's got no power, (what a type r should have anyway) and cuts out while driving, and keeps sayin oil pressure is low.

It won't be the VTEC system, that runs on oil pressure and cam timing, the lack of power is from your charging system and that you are getting a weak pulse to your spark plugs.

Have a good shop look at your alternator output. That will be the clincher.

No timing belt needs to be changed on our engines... we have a timing chain!

How much mileage does you engine have?

It's done £40,000 so not much at all. Oil pump might be damaged lets hope it hasn't damaged anything else, say oil pressure low, and cuts out. X

Dave, I presumed she meant the timing chain. Not a big deal. The previous owner must have flogged the car, or it wasn't maintained faithfully.

A timing chain and tensioner changeout at 40k miles ( UK, remember) is premature, but not outside the realm of real.

ya either poor maintenance or major abuse... and these engines can take abuse as long as you are on top of thing.

It's a shame really when you see things like this!

Hi guys, the car needs a new engine, the sump was damaged and they welded it, and there is shrapnel in the engine that has caused the oil pump to mess up, the previous owners r a car hire company that have a service and mot station on site, they got the number plate changed over last month it had a privet number plate, do you think I have a leg to stand on if I try and get then 2 cough up?

You could try. It seems that they knew something was up and unloaded the car without a proper going over.

Their own MOT station means they can write their own inspections. Not cool. I would go after them, but beware, it can get costly. How much does a recycler charge for an engine over their?

It's £1500 for new engine then about £700 for labour ( I'm so annoyed, they are a big company so I don't they will want the hassle, I could also threaten them with the local papers,

Probably easier to get the new lump and be done with it. At least you can keep the gearbox.
