Default tranny drain plug leak

I have an oil leak on the tranny side, next to the bolt to drain the transmission fluid. I have replaced the washer for the drainbolt and the washer for the fill bolt. I torqued it to 33 ft lbs, still leaked, so I tqd it to 40.
What could be causing it to leak in that area?
Also a different problem that worries me is when I'm in first gear, after accelerating I hear a Clunk sound, like the tranny engaging or whatever, what could that be? Could it be something with the 4wd?

Worried because its my DD ATM and today when I was going up a street something felt like a bolt or nut dropped from my engine. Like I was in 1st and and I accelerated something "dropped" from the front and flew backwards, like I felt it under me but I didn't see anything come flying out the back of the car.
Car is an 88 wagovan pushing 280k. I will take pics in the morning of the leak.

check for cracks in the casing previous person to handle it. might have over tighten the bolt and caused a crack, Also well in gear does it feel loose, does it pop out of gear, or does this clunk sound only happen when going into first? syncros might be wearing out and a tranny rebuild or replacement is in your future

OK I'll look for a crack. It doesn't pop out of gear. That clank sound does happen I think in 3rd. It doesn't happen while switching gears but happens after already in gear and accelerating.
