How do I remove the top mount brake light cover? I need to take it off so I can remove the tint behind it and the rest on the rear windshield.

Anyone have any tricks/tips on removing old bubbled up purple tint? The guy at the glass shop said to use a razor blade to pull up the tint, then use methanol to remove the left over glue. It needs to be heated up prior to doing this though? I would prefer not to do it this way as I would be worried about scratching the glass and defrosters. Not to mention being around methanol fumes for hours..

I also read about using a clothing steamer to remove the tint and glue, anyone here ever try that?

I read on preludeonline ages ago that someone had (not in this order)

used black garbage bags and taped the entire back window leaving it in the sun to generate heat

used orange cleaner to peel at and loosen the glue for stubborn tape that would not come undone

and that it took him about a week of chipping away at it before he finally got it all off the window ...

(so he taped off the inside of the window, left it in the sun, pulled a bit back doused it in orange cleaner and let the heat/greenhouse effect eat at the glue .. and repeated, peeled tint, rubbed off glue, and repeated again ..)

 

I got a cheap clothes steamer from Walmart for like $20. Let the heat from the steam heat up the tint and glue and slowly peel it away. Could take awhile . Then return the steamer

 

Yeah I saw some vids with the garbage bag method, I'm going to give that a try. Hahahah I'll keep that in mind drbenne.

 

I tried the garbage bag method and it left tons of glue. That's when I decided to try the steamer. Took a bit longer but got about 99% of the glue off.

Well I finally finished removing the tint. It took me over 8 hours to remove the tint off all the windows, even the driver and passenger side ones were tinted. I was able to steam and pull off the tint on the front ones. The small windows and rear had to be scraped off.

I tried the garbage bag method but it was too caked on to be pulled off. Luckily I had a razor blade scraper handy and alot of razor blades. Soapy water in a spray bottle makes all the difference and is tolerable for working in a confined space for hours. Nice to able to see out the back finally.
