What is the best car alarm out there?
Clifford alarms are nice....
What it really matters is installation. Hiding the wires, adding a second battery etc etc........
A good instalation will make a cheap alarm system look good. That is why I don't think it is a good idea to take it to Circuit City or something becasue althought the alarm has potential it is too damn easy to install one fast.....

I would like to know what peoples opinions are as well. I personally was looking into a Firsttech/Compustar....the one with the two way pager.

dosn't matter how much the alarm cost or how it is installed, a good theif will get your car. I got the jc wwitney $70 special, and believe it or not, it has a lot of features. Just took some time to install right.
I install car stereos and alarms for a living...honestly if i thief wants your stuff he will get it...but the best for the money is a Viper...you can get it installed for around $200 for a 300HF model...Thats with keyless, shock sensor, LED on dash, 2 tone sirien, and door trigger...and if the salesman tries to get you into a a proximity sensor dont it..its more of a hassel then anything..lemme know if you have anymore questions...
Viper 500 is pretty minimum, but you can buy accessories and upgrade your system....the viper 550 is remote start, and you get more stuff as you go along...ive seen a viper 800 as the highest, not sure about any newer...the viper 500 goes for about 250$ installed at a place like circuit city/best buy.

The 500 has 2 more aux channels then the 300, and the 800 has a total of 4 (i believe maybe 5) aux channels..but you can always add a channel expander...and as far as Viper goes you can add a Pager Port, Car Com, Voice arm and disarm, window and sun roof mods, trunk pop, remote start(might have to have an interface depending on the car), you can pop your gas tank, cut on your radio...just about anything you can think of with a little help fro relays
According to my engine electrical teacher the best alarm is wiring a switch in... somewhere secret that will prevent the car from clicking over

this has worked for me the past 6 months.
keyless, shock, door, trunk, & hood triggers, ignition kill(not hooked up, dont want to chance it), remote trunk(with actuator seprate), led in the dash, and remote start(not hooked up, manual)
all for about 170. installed+power locks, which i installed myself
definitly worth it!

what is a proximity sensor?
My friend actually has that in his IROC. It disables the ignition. So the theif breaks in and instead of stealing your car he steals anything he can grab.
I like my clifford. Since I live in the city i took the option of tweaking up the sensitivity on it. Sure it goes off a lot, but I still got my car and all the expensive toys I have put in it. Plus, I am the kinda guy to go investigate why its going off and more then once I have seen the purps running from the scene when I show up with my BOOM STICK!
But really, alarm it where you leave it and you'll find it where ya left it.

I have a dealer-installed alarm plus I installed a "kill" switch for the ECU and a hood-lock.
What I did was re-route the wires, wrap them in black electrical tape so they all look the same(like OEM wires) and moved the alarm module to a different place and tie-wrapped it.
That way if someone breaks into the car at least they'll have to sweat it out!!!!
