Help...Honda Accord Ex 1999 Coupe
I have had this car since it was new...At around 135,000 miles it started
having a multitude of problems..
Most recent problem 144,000
After being smogged, and passing, two days later the check engine light comes on..most recent problem. I don't have the code yet.. I do check the gass cap and I am taking it for the code.
At 140,000, the ac blows but doesn't work..no lights come on the unit, the front and rear defroster don't work either.....
135,000..Car will not start sometimes after stopping, shop could not duplicate the problem, said it might be the leaking battery so they replaced it..9/2013, now the problem is starting again...
90,000
Not sure if this is related, check Engine comes after being at the dealer for major service...timing belt..etc...90,000...I am told I need a new ECM, for 1,500 ...not done light is reset....
30,000
Check engine light comes on, told I need the computer chip which I am assuming is the ECM....light is just reset..
I don't know anything about cars..I want to sell this one but I need to address this issues and I don't want to pass on these problems..
Any help would be appreciated..
I was told the starting issue might be the main relay switch..
I wonder if the smog is related to the check engine light...
I am a bit afraid to buy another Honda...mine is black and the clear coat on the trunk and roof has been peeling since 100,000..
Thank you for any help...It is greatly appreciated.....
Would I be better off with a 2013 Nissan or a 2013 Civic?
JUst putting it out there....

Outside if CA, many parts stores will read the codes for free - just be sure to get the code and not their description of the issue.
Many of the 6th gens had issues with the HVAC control panel - their are write ups on "fixes" or many just replace it with a used or new panel.
I'll guess this is a 6 cyl ? - there are reports of the v6's in this gen having issues with vapor lock....car is at normal op temp, shut it off, try to re-start is about 10~15 minutes later and the car will not start or does start but runs badly/sputters.
Last - if it is an auto trans....IMHO the 2013 is where I would go.

2. u can pull the ECU and open it and check to see is anything is fried or burned. it's easy to tell. also people are people maybe the techs forgot or broke a sensor
3. best to learn about cars so u can fix them yourself and avoid random unknown issues the dealer wont own up to. better sooner than later
4. new cars have problems too but usually under factory warranty (which the dealer will try to stiff u out of) u will never know what is going to happen until it happens to EVERYONE then its a Factory Recall
5. cars are basically cars learn as much as u can about one and it will apply to a variety of cars
