Default Very first HID issue on my 95 Civic. NEWB. I need some help with this!!!

Thank you. I deferred from putting this in the usual 92-00 Covic forum, as we have a lighting issue forum. So, here I am...

OK. I am now in a position to do something to my lighting, as now my low beam has quit.. so I have a headlight out. YES that is ticket-worthy! So.. since I have the HIDs, I need to know what to do.

A little background info: 1. This is my VERY FIRST car with HIDs. EVER. AND my first Honda I have had for any length of time... 2. The car has ALWAYS had a high beam out, and now the low beam has gone out - on the OPPOSITE side!

Here are pics. I have a 1995 Civic EX, "engine is from a year 2000" I have not verified but I believe it is. Here are the pics, to tell the details, of what it is doing: (6 pics)

Brief: Driver side = Low beam OUT; Passenger side = High beam OUT. Need to fix.

Driver's side "Ballast:"

Passenger's side "Ballast:"

Here is a video I watched, to see some VERY VERY BASICS of HID.

SO.. before I do ANYTHING (Waste money.. Mess it up.. Short it out.. do ANYTHING...) HOW DO I MAKE THEM WORK 100%!!

Thanks.

Throw them away and do a proper retrofit.

the HID's will not produce a accurate beam pattern from a halogen housing. HID housings have spacial reflectors to not blind on-coming traffic

to make them work proper u would need HID projectors and do a Projector Retrofit.

that will cost a lot more and u already have ur kit.

grumble was suggesting u purchase a higher quality HID kit which should come with Denso Slim ballast and Phillips bulbs. ur kit is probaly ebay.com and will fall apart soon/ cheap enuff to throw out. fog lights will provide u with two working lights in the front so as to not look like a motorcycle and avoid tickets plus they are cool as **** if they are HID yellow 3000k

there is really no way to make them work properly but the smart thing to do would be to install them at night and u would probaly have to position ur headlight beam all the way down for a useful light beam. u would still have lots of "over spray" which will blind others but not as much

p.s. denso slims run $200 for a pair then u have to buy bulbs and projectors and wire harness+ DIY install/ professional install. many places will retrofit HID's

As everyone else said, get projectors so you're not blinding people. Anyhow, test the HID by switching the bulbs from side to side. If the bulb that was out still doesn't work in the other ballast or it looks bad during a visual inspection then the bulb is the problem. If the good bulb doesn't work on the opposite ballast then either the ballast is bad or there's a fuse or wiring problem which can be found with a voltmeter or even a test light and checking the fuse. It's rather simple diagnostics. As for the halogen bulb, pull it out and look at it and if it's blown replace it

Recently joined forum. Glad people actually care about not blinding others, the forum from my ford truck seem to all be punks and not care about blinding people.

Agree with the other posters do a proper retro fit. HID's are great, when installed correctly.

A few more things to add to the (now old) thread:

1. These headlights would benefit GREATLY from interior cleaning. They are filthy. Even with excellent bulbs/lighting installed, the interior of the housings are dusty, and the exterior lens needs polishing. He should, IMHO, have started with this issue.

See my new thread on the subject here

2. Also, when ballasts go out, the first place I check is to open the ballasts and check for condensation/moisture inside it. I've owned around 8 Ebay HID kits in the past, and the issue 9 times out of 10 is within the ballasts, not the bulb. Usually the case is that rain water gets inside the casing to the ballast. I've saved a couple that were beyond the point of repair by opening the case, blowing with a hair dryer, and reassembling them with some gasket maker around the casing and/or connection passage ports.

3. Ultimately though, Ebay (Xentec, typically) Xenon/HID kits last about a year. Best to request the seller send you an extra ballast or two when they ship you the kit. Only cost about $8 per ballast extra, and usually no shipping increase either. Worth the extra dough to have them on hand...

Hope this helps. Good luck! (if this hasn't already been solved).
