Default My $400 96 Civic I bought

So, I posted this in the introduction subforum because I didn't know there was a build-journal subforum. Mods feel free to delete the one in the intro section if it has to be.

Bought this from a friend's boyfriend who drove it daily, parked it one night, then it wouldn't start the next day. He is not the patient type who likes having things fixed so he left parked 3-4 months and bought a new truck. So I bought it yesterday and towed it home and finally got it to run today. need some heavy maintenance though. I will post updates here. Although it ill be slow going :'(

Funny story. The guy had a "mechanic" look at it, the mechanic said it needed a new motor but he would buy it for $900. Luckily for me, he declined the offer. I think the only thing that was essential for it to run was an ignition coil.

96 Civic DX EJ D16

I have all the intake parts, they're just missing from the picture. New cap, wires, plugs in place. Needs a new coil ATM.

Looks like a good deal! Needs some work but def worth the $400. What color are you gonna paint it?

aftermarket cruise, lol.

Yea, what plans do you have for it? I bought a DX coupe awhile back with a bad transmission, seller swore up and down the trans went out... it was just an axle!

I like those kinds of deals!

Good luck!

I plan to keep it clean and restore it bumper to bumper, ill clean and paint engine bay but probably not shave it, unless i end up pulling the motor for a rebuild. i will mod it a lot, but i have no plans of a motor swap. the D16Y7 is good enough for me, its gonna be a DD. ill add some new tech to it too, like shaved doorhandles, add electric windows and locks, keyless start button, TPMS, Android Tablet ICE, and complete interior overhaul like upholstery and stuff.

for now i have plans to just keep it red, i think id like a metallic red, not metalflake. glitter just doesnt suit red paint too well IMO.

yea i wondered about the cruise control, funny thing though. it seems to have a factory style switch, i have to get a pic of it and you guys can tell me if it is or not. so the solenoid might have just replaced by a universal one.

What's first on the list for the project after you get it running? I'd start with getting the whole car buffed out if there isnt actual chipping in the clear coat. I work at a dealership and have seen our detailers work wonders on faded paint. Those headlights will buff out to look like new too.

right now my primary goal is to get it drivable and reliable to park my brand new 13' Camaro to keep the miles off, it has 12k mile now, i had it since it only had 9 miles on it, brand new.

after i get the new coil in, probably tomorrow, i need to start buying up parts for a rebuild. I'm going to start by tearing the motor down without pulling it to see what kind of condition everything is, if its main bearing are good then ill just leave it. i will remove the head and look at the cam, and valves to make sure they seat well. then ill do a timing job on it, with water pump change and possibly oil pump. on top of all this im going to fix all leaks of any kind.

while i have everything torn down ill clean the engine bay really well and rattle can it for the time being. when im sure the engine is tight ill clean and seal the under-body, and replace severely worn suspension parts. ill at least do the body work and seal it.

then ill start work on the interior and clean out the dirty funk smell, replace carpet, patch up seats as necessary.

then after ALL that ill start the heavy mod stuff, no machine work though. i like this car because of the simple non-vtec motor, and 5 speed. my camaro has 436bhp, i dont nee a "fast" civic lol

so far ive buffed the head lights, did a oil pan gasket and oil change, internals looked well enough, i saw no obvious reason for me to spec fully. the cylinders still had very faint cross hatch marks. next up i valve cover gasket change, and timing job too, with water pup and bearing.
