Default The revised h22 auto tensioner

Hey guys, I've read a few threads on these subjects but none are answering my question fully. I own a 94 prelude vtec and have a 1999 h22a4 swapped in. I'm doing the timing belt. Also I have a 98 gsr integra that is gutted and modded. I plan on keeping the prelude stock motor wise. While only installing exhaust, intake, and a little lower. That said here are my 2 questions.

1. Is the revised tensioner any better/less likely to fail? As stated above keeping my prelude stock internals no turbo no head work.
And
2. What year was the tensioner revised?
I believe the part number is 14520-p13-013
Thanks in advance guys my first post on here.

I dont recall them being revised... You have 3 choices, the unreliable h22 auto-tensioner, a H23 manual tensioner, or a KS manual.

H22's autos suck, and H23 manuals are a pain to install. A KS is cheap, reliable, and easy to install.

Not a hard choice.

Yeah I kept Leaning to the ks just didn't want to wait for shipping when Honda is right around the corner from me about 5 miles away. I think I go with it though. That's the one with the jam nut set up right? Those stay pretty reliable?

I ran into a problem yesterday. I'm not sure if the motor even runs. I bought it wrecked for 200. Rear pass. Side suspension needs replaced, and need both bumpers and some body work. But the valve cover was off and timing belt was off the cam gears. The cams were both lined up at tdc but when I checked the crank via (put the oil dip stick down in cyl1 and turn the crank manually until it hit the top point. ) it was off by afew turns off my ratchet. not the best method I know but always works on my b series figured I give it a go. Only reason I did it is because the car is in my back yard I can't really Jack it up. I turned the wheels all the way to the left and can get my impact on the crank bolt but it wouldn't break lose. peeling back the timing belt plastic cover and trying to pry down the tensioner to get some slack on the belt no movement in the tensioner. We ended up just trying to pry the belt on with a pry bar, screwdrivers nothing got it on there. We eventually broke the timing belt. Already had a dayko belt in the box so I want worried about the belt just didn't want to hurt the cam gear. Any ideas why it was so hard to get the belt on? Now I have to find a way to get the motor to not turn over while I stand on a breaker bar to get the crank pully off. Srry so long.

If you just unbolt the tensioner the belt will fall off, then install belt and bolt back on.

If the engine is spinning while trying to crack the pulley nut, you need to go rent a lock from the parts store.

nebmaster, if its a manual, put it in gear and have a friend press on the brakes then go for the bolt ..

Otherwise, like sparksman said buy/rent the crank pulley holder. it's a big piece of steel with a bolt in it and a hole so you can get to the pulley bolt.. put a breaker bar in it for leverage and torque it.. (sort of like a large version of a valve adjust tool)

I just put an F22 manual tensioner and hardware on mine. Worked fine and simple.

Okay guys Thanks for all the replies! I got the Honda crank holder tool. (It's not the actual Honda one is the kind that you use two breaker bars on.) Well set it all up 2 24" snap on 1/2" drive breaker bars non ratcheting. And a snap on extension to the breaker bar we're torquing on. The extension is resting on a jack stand to keep it level. I ended up breaking the head off of my snap on extension. (Yay free replacement) was actually my stupid fault because I only have my wobble head extension at the house. So I made a mix of atf and acetone and is soaking now. I'm going to go either break one of my breaker bars or my Pittsburgh extension or that Damn bolt is coming off. Anyone ever used this atf/acetone mix as a penetrating oil before?

Got it! Auto tranny fluid / acetone 50/50 mix two applications 10 min apart ate lunch cracked it off.

Well when I got the tensioner off I noticed the boot was wet at one point a little pin hole. not sure if oil is even supposed to be in the boot... The tensioner itself looked brand new I probably ripped the boot prying on it. However it held great tension and of course my friend had to see how it worked. I warned him not to turn it over when compressed. .. Of course he did oil shot out of it. So even if I was good I'm not using it now. Ks it is!

After years of working on b series I got that lower timing cover off and even though I've seen pictures and write ups of the job. I saw right in front of me all the belts and gears and was like "my god Honda, what did you do?" I can set the timing and do belts on a b series on 20 min... I'm going into day three tomorrow on this one. I try and pace it out seeing as I have the integra. Don't want to get frustrated and break something.

You need to host the photo on a website that hosts pics like: photobucket, your personal google account, etc..

Once you load up the pic, you basically right click on the pick when its at full size, then copy the picture URL address:

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m...000_0003-5.jpg

You need to put the img tags on both ends of that above URL address.

It will look like this: [img]URL address[/img]

Then the photo will be posted in your post.
