I have a 98 honda civic ex, it just shuts off while driving, I notice the ABS comes on then the MPH or RPM flicker then shuts off, or it shuts off without any signs, I can't figure it out... Any suggestion

I change the ignition madule and coil, problem still continues can't figure it out

 

Does the engine immediately restart?

 

Is the CEL on? Does it work? Is there a predictable speed, RPM, or engine load where you can repeat the problem? Any modifications? Any recent changes?

 

I had that problem on my '99 Civic LX (D16Y7 engine). It turned out to be the ignition switch, which was the subject of a recall (Honda service bulletin 02-231) in the early '00s. When I contacted my local dealership and gave them the car's VIN, they told me that my specific vehicle was not affected by the recall. Nevertheless, I got a replacement switch kit on Ebay (Honda part 35130-S04-305), fitted it, and it's never stalled since.

I would love to know if my vehicle was really not covered by the recall or if, as I suggest, the dealership simply didn't want to do any free work on a 14 year-old car which was never going to go there for paid servicing, anyway. When I dissected the old ignition switch, there were carbon deposits and heat damage on some of the contacts, so it was clearly bad and that was obviously the problem.

 

Non-hazardous recalls also have an expiration date. It's entirely possible they didn't tell you the truth, but your car also wasn't eligible because it was entirely too late.

 

I'd say that this recall was pretty darn hazardous! On one occasion, I stalled at 70mph on the I-10. Thankfully it was in the middle of the night on a virtually empty road, but if that had been in heavy, fast-moving traffic the result could have been very unpleasant.

If the dealership had been honest and said that they don't do free recall repairs on cars over a certain age, even safety-critical ones, then that would have been fair enough: they would have confirmed that my car had a known problem, and then I'd have known that it was my responsibility to fix it. But in this case, they claimed that the problem didn't exist when it clearly did.

When the engine stalls, do the cluster warning lights turn on or are they off?

Before the engine will restart, do the cluster warning lights fail to turn on with the key in ON(II)?

 

my Pontiac Malibu does the same thing, and even though GM dealerships tell me that my car doesn't have the ignition switch recall, its obviously effected by the issue since it stalls while driving down the road.

my v6 accord has also has had transmission problems for years, and Honda denys any problems with that too.

they're greedy businesses, what else is new.

Ignition switch, like other members suggested.

You can just replace the electrical part of the switch.

Ignition switch failure is probably preceded by some voltage fluctuation in the system.

Can you provide a part # for JUST the electrical aspect of the switch?
I have searched hi and lo for just such a part for a 96 Civic DX but
the only part is the full switch, eg, electrical + key cylinder.

Majestic and Bernardi Honda don't offer these parts for sale even
though they are depicted in the system diagrams.

I change the ignition swicth and for sure it was that

 

Also having issues with coolant pushed into reservoir. Not all the time

 

Depending on how much, that is normal behavior. It's why the max line is not at the top of the resevoir. There needs to be room for liquid expansion during heat up and when the engine cools it pulls the coolant back into the rad.

 

I hate to dig up an old post, but did you ever find an answer to this? I've been looking for an answer since I need to replace the switch in my 96 civic and have been considering part # 35130-S04-305. Sorry and thank you for your time
