broke a bolt trying to put ,y cover back on my engine (D16y7 w/ Y8 head) and couldnt get it out, i was wondering is it fine to drive it with that bolt stuck until i get it fix (which will be monday) or should i not drive it at all

 

Is this a valve cover bolt that broke?

It should be okay. I wouldn't run it hard personally though. You may leak some oil though. Just a heads up.

 

We need a picture buddy, because if the bolt isn't seized you could very well try a screw extractor and have that bish out in no time.

 

I believe it is seized my friend had an extractor and couldn't get it out but ill get you a pic tomorrow just to make sure

 

Probably not siezed. Did you break the top stud trying to tighten it? Or does that motor just have those long weird looking bolts? It's going to leak quite a bit of oil.

 

Do you mean a flange bolt with a smooth shank? Not weird, quite common in the automotive and machinery fields.

 

I just broke one a few days ago. Right in the middle of the shank. Lucky I had some extra bolts from the wreckers on hand, and it was a good excuse to buy some decent needle nose vise-grips.

Interested in seeing your photos, and actually I don't even know what a screw extractor looks like... (google time)

 

the one i know of is pretty much a drill bit with reverse thread. You use one end to drill into the screw slightly to make an indentation to grip the bit with, and then flip it around, and put your drill in REVERSE, not forward. The reverse thread with reverse on the drill means its going to drill into the screw while turning lefty-loosey. Which means the tighter the bit is into the screw, the harder the torque on the screw is to come out. On a lot of occasions this all happens so fast that you don't even realize it, like 3 seconds and bam its out. That is, if you have a screw that cooperates.

He's talking about the valve cover bolt that has a long thick shank, then very small threads. Make sure there isn't a metal chunk laying where it broke. you'll be fine driving on it, it will leak! My bro plugged his with a shop towel temporarily. use an e-z out, make sure you lay a massive amount of paper towels before you start drilling(those metal shavings WILL go EVERYWHERE!!!).

 

And yea thats the one im talking about I've tried and just couldn't get it out so its at the shop now to get that out and a little tune up

 

You could use a Dremel tool to score a deep line across the top of the broken bolt and then use an impact driver with a flathead bit to remove.
