Stripped tranny thread block side. Can I retap?
Hey guys, I finally finished my build and while putting the tranny on I found out the block has stripped threads. My local machine shop is charging me $30 a hole to fix and its 3 or 4 of them. Is this something I can just retap? Or is it necessary to bring to my local shop.
Its the 4 holes surrounding the top of the tranny from about the starter to the slave cylinder.
If I can re thread these myself I would prefer too, I am already extremely deep into this build and need to save everything I can. What is the tap I would need for these? Or the thread pitch.
Also, would it be easier for me to install the longblock into the bay first and then use a jack to get the transmission in? It was difficult getting the tranny and block together on the ground with a friend. And it will be more difficult moving it from the back of my house to the front to put it in my Del Sol.
Please help ASAP this is holding me up! Thanks for any and all help!!!!

Just let the shop do it. It would probably be more expensive to get it done yourself plus you know it will be done correctly.
And you install the transmission and engine as one unit.

I dont see how it would be more expensive if I only need a tap and dye. So I'd like to know if I can do that. I am unsure if they will take my long block or ask me to break it down to a short block which I am not willing to do at this point.
If anyone can answer my original questions its appreciated. thanks

If you absolutely have to do it yourself, I've always had good luck with the Helicoils. They can be expensive as you're buying a special tap, but inserts can be purchased separately, and they're generally designed to use with normal drill bits.
That might be what the shop would do.

I would get the helicoil kit and do it yourself. You will wind up using it more than you think and it will be a lifesaver in the future. Ive got them for all the common sizes and can fix any stripped thread.
I do recommend using a sharpie to mark the drill bit for how deep u wanna go so u don't over drill anything
