How are you determining your operation temperature? Are you talking about position on the temp gauge or are you using a Infrared thermometer?

Headers will color naturally from the heat, gold is the first stage of brand new stainless steel, it's perfectly normal, they will get darker over time.

Default Re: 98 EX 1.6L - Temperature question

Engines vary. The normal operating temperature for a modern (e.g., 1996+) automobile engine, manufactured for sale or use in the US, will fall between 200 and 250 degrees F. Smog equipment and computerized combustion control favor a 'hotter' running engine. The proper amount and concentration of coolant in your engine will protect it.
The thermostat plays a big part in controlling it. If you buy a 185 degree thermostat it opens at 185 degrees. Same with a 195 & so on. Average engine temp (as no specific given) would be around 195 - 205 degrees. The cooling fans come on around 210 degrees approx. The temperature will vary according to driving conditions, ambient temperature etc..

The first two lines in the thread I linked you two says...
I am throwing this post together to make is easier for people to get info about getting the most out of a D16 VTEC, NA, while keeping it completely streetable. I am approached every day by people who ask me about my setup, etc, and this will make things easier for sure!

The advantages of going NA with the D16 VTEC are that it is easy to work on, the majority of the OE parts can be had for less than their DOHC counterparts (since alot of these parts are laying around due to DOHC swaps) and it will get you moderate power for moderate price.
It is a thorough write up so it will take a thorough reading.

Default vms crankshaft pulley?

Is a vms crankshaft pulley really worth it?

If you think 160p is "powerful" then that thread is perfect for what you want to do. But I can tell you having driven a heavy non-VTEC Prelude with the H23 powerplant you won't be happy with that for long. Especially with the comparatively low torque numbers.

No one knows what "worth it" means to you. Do you have a specific technical question?

According to the pic he posted in another thread (on a stock engine) he has a water temp gauge hooked up.

But can you really get much more than 160 on a D-series without forced induction.

Really? Usable? Streetable power? Define "much more". I have more on my stock boosted D-series right now than the OP will ever have NA. For the 3gs used as budget you can build a pretty decent turbocharged D. People tend to not want to go turbo because of the lack of information and misinformation.

I have only recently been reading up on the possible actions you can take with a D16Y7, which led to mini me, which led to reading up on the B16Y8's. And the common thing that comes up when forced induction is mentioned for the D is that you WILL want forged Rods otherwise your engine will be a ticking timebomb waiting for the OEM Rod bolts or your OEM rods to fail.

190-200hp? Show me builds and dynos.

Note: The more you push a D-series past that magic 160hp number the more difficult and expensive it gets to make that power and you sacrifice a lot. So if the OPs goal is a drag car or something and he has money to burn then that makes sense. I'm going to go out on a limb and state that his budget isn't anywhere near even the 3K mark.

Pushing the D16 to that level of performance pretty much renders it totally unsuitable for daily street driving. Big numbers are really there only to impress the easily impressed.

Oh. And a build up of the bottom end can be had for well under $1k.

Oh, woah, No. I was simply asking you if it was possible.

From what I been reading you are correct with this statement;

Now if 98civd16y8 wants to stay NA the information is pretty solid if they're sticking with the D series motor. But I have been getting a lot of different information with turbo'd D's.

But you been here a lot longer and more aware of the misinformation that has been provided about turbo'd D's. Plus, you own one yourself.

Missed that, this forum or a thread in another forum (i.e. appearance forum)?

NVM, merged the threads, only allowed one thread per car. Threads merged.

Please do not create multiple threads for your one car.

As for running temp, the thermostat should be fully open at 194*F/90*C (see page 10-7 in the Integra FSM, which shares P#'s with the D16Y8). Translation: It shouldn't get much hotter than that.

Yea I don't want to go boosted I'm trying to sell the thing. So I'm doing little mods. As far as the crankshaft pulley goes I hear mixed reviews on iac problems some swear by it and some say it increases performance. Can someone elaborate please.

Modifications will most likely bring down the value of your civic if you are trying to sell it. Part it out, sell it as it is now or spend the money on fixing any minor issues with it. But not on more aftermarket products. - Just my opinion.
