Cheap things to do to a D series.
A friend of mine just bought a ej1 and it came with a D16a6 in it and he wants to know what he can do to make it faster. hes looking of cheap things that make a difference. Do you know of anything like that?
cheap, reliable, fast. You can only pick 2.
And it's a D series, unless you spend money to build and turbo it. You are going to spend money for nothing.

Yep, that hits the nail on the head. There's no such thing as cheap speed for a D series engine. What transmission is in the car right now? D series transmissions are readily available and cheap, and while shorter gears won't increase your horsepower, it will increase your effective torque, making the car peppier to drive. Also, weight loss is free. Less weight = faster acceleration, faster braking, and better turning.
This is all covered in the FAQ sticky. Tell your friend to read it. Don't read it for him, don't read it to him. If he's too lazy to read it for himself, he isn't ready to undertake a project car.

Seriously, nothing that's worth it unless you go turbo. Also that's the wrong engine for the car, that engine is from a 88-91 Civic EX/Si, CRX Si.
its cheap and makes his car faster, thats what he asked for. When the BOV or waste gate grenades themselves it wont be so cheap. Or when the oil lines break and leave him stranded if not ruin his engine. And the turbo bearings will prolly wear out after 10,000 miles, but still in the short term its a solution he may want to consider.
^^and you know all about this stuff right? WTF are turbo bearings? Never seen a wastegate or BOV grenade. For that matter I've never hear of oil lines breaking.

EDIT: fyi boosting a d-series does net you better mpg, I'll let you figure out how much of a gain in mpg you get on your own.
Stainless steel oil lines don't break, the only way I'll see if BOV or wastegate grenading is if someone is boosting beyond what there equipment is capable of, depending on which bearing, **** that they are all rebuildable with quality parts.

I would suggest using better bearings in the turbo vs the cheap low-quality-control ones from the Chinese factory. IV also read alot that the rubber in the other parts is usually of extremely shitty quality and will often break. If its a thing and its Chinese it'l find a way to break
You can boost anything. You can boost a lawnmower if you want to. YOu can boost a D15. You just have to know the limits of the stock internals. You also have to know how to get a properly sized turbo for your application. So yeah, you can boost even if you drive low RPMs all the time. "Better bearings in the turbo". How about just buy a good turbo to begin with? And you absolutely CAN get better gas mileage with a turbo. It's all in the tune and how it's driven.
And we're giving advice to someone's "friend" not the actual owner of the car. Is your friend incapable of starting his own account and asking his own questions?

a quality turbocharger isn't cheap and OP said cheap. EBay parts are cheap and you get what you pay for. But for a lil while OP will finally be able to pass people on the highway in his old civic
Well that's the point then, because the OP said cheap and you jump on a turbo kit from eBay, forgetting the most important and also expensive part of boosting a car; the tune/EMS.
So next time instead of trying to be a smartass maybe you can offer realistic suggestions. Realistically, there is nothing cheap (inexpensive) you can do to a D-series . I've been shouting this to the heavens for years.
