Another Stripped engine intake manifold Q -01 LX
Greetings,
Well, I am looking for advice or experience with the bolts going into the engine block. I know how to use google, found some people saying helicoil, some people saying tap n dye, I could pretty much throw myself off a bridge because I screwed this up so I need outside advice.
My gf has a 01 Civic LX - auto. She had a cracked intake exhaust. I bought replacement parts. I work on my 99 civic all the time, so I decided to take this project on after we were quoted about 1G from several dealers. I bought the parts from a discount Honda parts store in Lisle, IL, for quite a bit cheaper than taking to dealers.
I get started on It just seemed to be going all wrong from the get go. The exhaust manifold bracket on bottom, would not come apart, so I needed to get another one of those because it was pretty much not coming off the old exhaust.
As I put the manifold back on, put in the two bolts and the 3 nuts on each of the studs coming off the engine, the two bolts never seemed to get tight. I bought new bolts. My guess is when I put the manifold back on, because I was unable to put the bracket back on, the only thing I can think of was that I misaligned the exhaust to the engine, and it stripped it out.
The left bolt is worse than the right one. As soon as I realized that they were in wrong, i pulled out the right bolt. Checking the holes in the engine, the left seemed to go pretty deep. The thread on the right hole seemed ok, the 1st thread looked as if it started to strip.
So here I am.
Should I have it towed to a dealer and then have them drill it out, rethread it?
If I use helicoil, what are the consequences of F..ing that up, and worse case scenarios if that were to happen.
The other problem is that we are now living in a different state than we are both from because of her grad school. So I'm not at all familiar with the mechanics here in Va yet.
My fear is that I could potentially be buying a new car if I screw up the engine too much.

If I were you I would just have it taken to a shop. If you've never repaired stripped threads before the first time you do it shouldn't be on the head of a motor.
