Top strut broke

That would be due to incorrect installation. Those bushings aren't supposed to prevent that rod from coming thru. You forgot to add the thick yellow zinc washer that goes in over the bump stops.
Also...the top washer is on upside down. Look more closely at the installation instructions.
Should be:
Spring> bump stop> thick gold/yellow washer (flat side up, chamfer side down)> dust cover> black washer > top hat with bushings> top washer with cup/open side facing upwards> top hat nut.
That top hat nut needs to be tight also. And not with an impact. Hold the strut shaft with the flat potion via a wrench (not pliers). Tighten the nut to 25lbs-ft IIRC.
Paying attention to install instructions on something you're not familiar with goes a long way.
