Aftermarket Distributor issues/timing
Hopefully I am posting in the right section
My CRX Si distributor went out recently, I ordered one online and installed it myself, needless to say it was a bit off on the timing, I adjusted the dist. by hand as far as I could and it would be almost perfect but still lacked power at takeoff or up hills.
So I took it to a mechanic who tried and tried to get it right, in the end he said the aftermarkets bracket was too small to adjust it out as far as needed and asked my permission to cut the "ears" as he called it, at the end of the top bracket where it rounded off in that oblong shape he cut the end so it would be open and he could "advance" the timing more.
I gave him permission to do so and once that was done he advanced it just a hair more and boom, it runs great and has all of it's power back.
I have very little experience with replacing an entire distributor, I have done the cap, bug, plugs and wires etc but never the entire thing.
So was it okay for him to cut that bracket to advance it more to run correctly or is there something else he should have done...I do know they set the #1 cyl. at TDC and tried everything they could but concluded that the aftermarkets bracket was just slightly too small.
Just a little worried that perhaps they missed something or maybe should not have set the timing that way...I don't know much about timing and just don't want their work to eventually mess something else up, so just curious if anyone else has had a similar issue. Thanks
