Default m/t loss of 5th gear

I have a 96 accord with 206,000 miles and a 5 speed manual trans. Last night was on the freeway and all the sudden fifth gear was no longer so I went to 4th and kept driving. I drove 190 miles home in 4th at 65 and there was this high pitched whine when I'd slow to around 20 or 30 and it got higher pitched as the rpms went up. I'm assuming my tranny is fried right?

What do you mean 5th gear was no longer? Like the shift lever popped out of gear while you were driving and now it won't engage?
