Default Wanting to buy a prelude

The prelude is priced at $3500 Ausd
It has 290,000 km on the clock and apparently has this wrong with it
"Faults:
-ABS motor over run.
-General wear and tear from a well used car, paint chips, small dents, small hole in fender, small amount of rust, decorative front reflector covers missing.
-Dash clock stuck in fast forward."
As the owner said in the ad
And apparently this was recently repaired
Recently repaired:
-Clutch plate
-Radiator
-Battery
-Steering and balance checked and tightened
-Major service in 2012
-Timing belt
-Receipts for all work included.

Its hard to say how much its worth over in Aussiland lol. Cars price varies depending on which region you dwell here in the states.

Having said that around here a car with that many km "180,xxx miles" and in that condition Id say between $2,500-$3000 US dollars, which aussie money is damn near the same. So $3500 is a little high for me, but who knows over there it could be about right...?

Looks all original for the most part, BUT I see the silver plug cover! I cant tell in the pic but is the valve cover blue? If so it could be a swapped H23aV or a F20b Blue-top, which if thats the case it would be a good pick up! As long as it runs good that is, cant tell you that over the internet.

Ask him what the stamp on the engine says, if its swapped then it has less km on the engine then what the dash reads. Blue-tops only came in accord SIR's in Japan.

so you're saying i could have a rare engine with less km's that quoted on my hands?
Do you think i could talk him/her down to 2800~? what could i throw in saying like it's not worth this much ra ra
There aren't allot of preludes here in aus and i've always wanted on, i bought a 1999 civic ek and ill probably sell it for 3500-4k and pick this up if i can, what do you think
Also would it still have vtec!!!

Got a reply
this is what they said
"Its was down to around 2000 now.
The major fault is the ABS motor is jammed so the ABS doesn't work and needs a new unit. I believe this precludes it from getting a RW in Qld but now some people have told me it doesn't and some have said it does.
Secondary faults are the electronics in the dash light cluster are getting old and some of the warning lights stay on or don't work (I've done a diagnostic on it and it's definitely a short circuit and not the brakes causing it other than the ABS light) and the clock is stuck in fast forward.
The only drive problem is the bushes are old so the wheel clunks more than it should."

For $2k Id say its worth it, why such a big price drop? You need to know the stamp code on the block to tell what engine it has. A transmission code would be nice too to see what trans it is.

The major issue with these cars is body rust. If its rust free, and isnt knocking, and the trans isnt shot, I say go for it. Its going to have a few issues, most older cars do. He's probably tired of throwing money at it, which is 90% of car sales.

Electrical gremlins arent fun, but one you get that, and the ABS fixed. The rest should be easy. Especially if you have a extra $1,500-$2k from the other car to help fix and get legal for the road.

He said it has rust but i have no idea how much
If i could get him down to 1800 i would probably do it,
How much is the new ABS thing he's talking about
Also what else would i have to fix for road worthy/how long would it take as i work part time and need a travel vehicle :/

Never had to fix an ABS issue yet, but for the condition I saw of most cars when I was in Aus last year, that is a decent price. If you can get the car for 1800-2000, and spend 500 or so to fix the abs, you are in good shape.

It might be worth getting a shop to check the car over before purchase, as they know what other issue to look for. If you need an inspection before you register the car, they can also tell you what would be needed to ensure it passes that.

Yeah i was thinking of getting a check if i was to get it
the check is like 200$ but..
Also is 290,000 km bad on a prelude, would it still go as hard as a 150,000 km one?
Would it still drive decently and have another 100,000 in it?

Thats the same code the H came with in the states. So im assuming its the original engine and miles, same as on the odometer. Its was not swapped, would have been nice though.

How do i go about fixing this abs issue he is talking about "Motor overrun" or something..
And the dash cluster lights staying on , he said he did a diagnostics and it's not the abs throwing the errors..
And will a prelude with 290km still drive well/pull hard?

Depending on how well it was maintained, it could still be fine. My cars first engine let go at 182K miles, which is 292K KM, but it was beat on pretty good from what I can tell. a compression check will say a good amount, and checking the oil for any metals etc.
