Default Rear brakes making "tick" noise when braking

Stock '98 Civic DX Hatch. Automatic.

Rear brakes make a "tick" noise when braking. Ticks faster when slowing from higher speed and slows as I slow down too.

Doesn't happen when I press the brakes very hard.

I've done some research and I think it might need new shoes on the rear brake drums. I couldn't find someone with the exact same symptoms. Opinions?

Obvious question. Have you removed the drums to actually check?

Sadly, I can't. I have no tools where I live. (no space either, crappy apartment.)

I don't even have a jack and jack stands...

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but asking for help will solve nothing for you if that's your situation. You'll end up taking it to a shop anyway so just go. Do you at least have friends that wrench on their cars?

Yeah, I got a friend who can do it for me. I'm just trying to find out what I can myself.

It would be more beneficial then to just ask your friend to look at it because no one on here can see/hear what you're talking about.

At the very least as far as an inspection is concerned, you will need
a jack (a jackstand is highly recced), a 19mm tire iron or breaker
bar + 19mm socket, 2 M8 1.25" (I believe) bolts at least 35mm in length
and corresponding 12mm socket. The 2 bolts make removal of the drum
much easier.

You should also get a service manual so that you can familiarize
yourself w/ the anatomy of the system in question.
