Default Minnesota Area Racers

Hey guys, don't post much here, but read all the time since it seems the majority of Nissan 240SX owners are a bunch of STUNNA's now. Ironic isn't it, that i come to the honda forums to get away from these people? Anyway......to my point, i live in MN, and i don't know many racers up in the area. Legitimate motorsports isn't really a huge thing up there just yet but is growing. So, if anybody has found sanctioning bodies that host events in the area at places like St. Cloud Safety Facilities, Dakota County Technical, Brainerd International Raceway, Blackhawk Farms Raceway, Road America, or any other tracks in the area, please give information here, so that all of us can relish in the glory of high performance driving.

i'll start by providing my input.

Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs, i'm currently active with these guys. Basically just a SCCA for the upper midwest. W2W competition and solo I style autocross is available through MCSCC, through your local club (Full Throttle Racing-MN for us MN guys) solo II is offered.

Donnybrooke Motorsports - hold events about every other week in Brainerd, i actually work for these guys on occasion. LOTS of track time with decent available instruction, great people, and the chance to meet semi-famous drivers such as Derek Bell (yes i met him).

AARRF (all american road racing federation)- not a fan of these guys at all; bad organization, bad on-track rules, just not good overall. on the positive side, they provide track time nearby in St. Cloud for dirt cheap.

so yeah......hopefully there are some other H-Ters out there in my area that want to get involved.

You might also want to check out Speedtrial, they had a couple of dates at Gingerman this year, I went to one in April. Also Blackhawk or Road America, WI. I have also done some AARRF events now only at ST Cloud, I agree they need some work but for the price you can't get a much better deal; I also did the BIR event with the Corvette Club/AARRF, you want to talk about lack of rules; no tech, corner workers, again lots of track time just not very safe. There is also a newer track in NE, MAM Midamerica Mototplex, that has some events.

hey guys.........good to know there are others in the area. when did you guys attend the AARRF events? maybe i saw you there? i had the black 98 240 w/kosei's. there are so many things about AARRF that bother me, but you're right, for $50, there really isn't a better track time/$ ratio around. have you driven to Gingerman before? i've thought about going but thought the drive was too far. is there a local BMW club or maybe Porsche that hosts events? how open is the corvette club to having non-corvette people there?

drop me a line anytime all you people in the area

We (Des Moines Valley Region SCCA) worked with Nebraska Region to put on two events at MAM this past year; plans are to do it again next year, but there are no firm contracts in place yet....

MAM is a good place to play - the track is 40' wide all the way around, and is busy enough to keep you occupied and working on car control. 2.1 miles in length, polymer-based asphalt, flat. (Well, there's a bit of camber to enhance drainage). You can see the entire track from the grandstands - good for spectators, friends, etc.

Spec Miatas turn low-mid 1:50s, dipping into the :49s occasionally.

EDIT: FYI, the track is located about 30 minutes south of Omaha/Council Bluffs, right along I-29.

are there any non-SCCA events at MAM, such as HPDE days or just plain ol lapping? the reason i ask is i don't have a cage, and AFAIK, you have to have a cage to run Solo I stuff. MAM is within range for me, especially when i'm at school in KS. if there are any events in the spring, be sure to post em up.

i can definitely tell you about donnybrooke since i work for them on occasion.

you are right........they are the spec racer guys. but as you probably know, they have a fairly serious setup with the trailor, a bunch of SRF's, and a crew that they take with them (that's me). all of this costs a significant sum of money.

their website can be seen here http://www.donnybrooke.com/site_home.htm

there's two operations under the donnybrooke name, an exotic repair shop (ferrari's mainly) which is run by Don Bodin's father, and the shop that i'm involved with that sells safety equipment, exotic cars, and houses all the Spec Racer's; both Ford and Renault. In between SCCA events Donnybrooke rents out Brainerd International Raceway to host various events for various groups. Some events are large corporations that pay to rent all the spec racers, the track, and all of the services that come with it.......hospitality, us crew guys etc. other events include drivers schools, which don't get you any kind of liscensing, but do provide you with more than ample amounts of track time from some pretty dang good instructors such as Gary Curtis (former Panoz GTS champion and real nice guy). At these events you can also rent out Donnybrooke cars, or use your own. The really really really cool thing they do for their frequent customers is the World Ferrari event they host, which Derek Bell is typically flown in for. Man was that an amazing day that i got to be involved with.

well........i think that's probably more than you wanted to know......but Don treats me very well and i wish to repay him (hopefully i'll get to work for them when i graduate college here in may). so if you have any more questions go ahead and ask me, or give Don a call, although he is an intensely busy man, and difficult to get a hold of.
