Default EF wont let me adjust ignition properly

So ive changed my timing belt, i have crank perfectly at tdc, as well as cam

So what im doing is i have the dizzy all the way towards the fire wall, i start my car, and im letting it warm up.

Then i have to jump the ignition adjusting plug, mines an 89 civic lx, mpfi converted, so the plug has a yellow cap by the driver fender.
Ive tried jumping it with: paper clip, one wire, and this plug that fits into it.

Well my ignition wont line up correctly, needs more advancement, but then my car starts to rev up a little( on its own) and the lines line up! Then the rpms go down a bit and timing is off, what am i doing wrong please help.

Refresh my memory, the older D16A6 is supposed to be using the 7 o'clock timing mark on the cam gear with respect to mechanical timing? Which cam gear and ECU are you using?

Sounds like your paper clip isn't disabling the electronic ignition advance. Might be a wiring issue.

The connector you ate putting the paper clip into has 2 wires. One goes to ground and the other goes to B20 on the ECU (brown wire). Try grounding pin B20 right at the ECU.

Im using the pm6 ecu.

By grounding the pin, you mean taking it out from the ecu and then grounding?

Based on the pics, my cam needs to be more tilted? And i lost my back cover somewhere so i can only line up the marks on the side.

I can make the white mark line up at 18° but theres hesitation on take off, and doesnt pull hard at all on 1st until i reach higher rpm.

So my cam is off?

The cam could be off if incrementally rotating the distributor isn't having any effect at all and your timing marks never come close to lining up.

If you the cam and crank markings all line up properly and you are just having difficultly setting your ignition timing because the ECU keeps adjusting when you turn the distributor, then I'm suspecting the wiring at the under-hood service connector isn't right.
I would take some wire and attach one end to ground.
The other end I would attach to a small paper clip or a small nail.
There is room for the paperclip to be inserted into the connector hole right along with the brown wire. You just need to push in far enough so that the paperclip makes contact with the metal of the connector pin.

Update on this*
I put a y7 cam gear in last week, the mechanical timing was perfect( had to mess with it for like 2 hours).

I let the car warm up, while the ignition connector was plugged, and i was able to successfully line up the ignition marks. Car ran great.
Now, my car sort of stumbles from first to 2nd... so i checked my ign timing, and its off again! And its advanced all the way.
So now it looks like its off 3 degrees. My car keeps changing the timing by itself, what should i do? And if the ecu is programming the timing on its own, does that mean its wrong, and therefore i will have to just move the distributor by "ear" untill it sounds and drives the best?
