For the longest time my car has a slow coolant leak under the distributor, and it leaves a thin film of coolant on top of the transmission. Well last week my car blew a 20 year old heater hose and I replaced all my radiator and heater hoses, and a new thermostat/thermostat gasket, and new radiator and overflow bottle, with wormgear hose clamps all around. For 2 days I haven't had any issues with overheating. However, there's still coolant on top of the tranny. I know this because I thoroughly degreased the entire tranny when I did this job. I also removed the small single wire coolant temp sensor under the dizzy, and applied threadlocker to it and reseated it in the head, and tightened it down. What could be leaking?

Did you check the coolant lines off the manifold on that side?? Do a pressure check and look for the coolant

 

Which coolant lines? And what manifold? if you're talking about the FTIV coolant line, The FITV was replaced, and I have a new hose en route, but that's not even close to where the leak is. it's always between those 2 ribs in the transmission case. And it's just a thin film. It's not the heater hose because I replaced that and put a fresh tight clamp on there, and degreased the whole area. Plus, the color of the leakage is the same as the new coolant. MY old coolant was green, this stuff is **** yellow.

 

you have a coolant line that runs off the back of the intake manifold to your thermo housing.... if that leaks and can leak down making it look like its coming from somewhere else you always start high and work down looking for any type of leak..regardless you will most likely find the leak with a pressure check .. pick one up from a store or tool truck

okay well i just did a bit of inspecting. The line that runs into the thermostat housing looks fine. Old, but fine. And there's no drip residue running through there to the tranny. The drip starts almost directly below the coolant temp sensor and goes STRAIGHT down the slope of the tranny, and that's it. I ran my fingers on the bottom of the dizzy, and there was a small amount of coolant mixed with sludge, but that very well could be from the hose blowout. I have doubts that it's that hardline from the intake to the thermo housing, nawmsayin?

The 2 wire sensor next to the 1 wire sensor you removed is also in the coolant jacket. it uses an o ring to seal to the head. It's about a 100 cents from the dealership.

 

IS THERE A PART DIAGRAM OR PART NUMBER AVAILABLE? WHAT IS THAT SENSOR ANYWAY? AND IS IT DIFFICULT TO REMOVE LIKE AN 02 SENSOR?

What is number 8?

I also find it odd that it seems to be leaking from 11, because that's lined up with the leakage. I replaced the sensor a year ago. I took it out last week and cleaned it up real good, applied threadlocker, and cleaned the hole, then torqued it back in. Still leakage.

a pic without the distributor might help, hard to really see anything. think about running it and just watching? put paper towels near suspected leak areas and see what happens

 

I've degreased the muhfugga, then ran the car and let it idle for ten minutes, then ran it at various RPM for 5 second intervals while under the hood, and no apparant leakage. It must be slow, whatever it is.

 

Have you pressure tested it yet?

If you take the distributor off remember to cut a line in it and the bracket so u dont have to use a timing light

I put a sheet of paper beneath the distributor, and I'm gonna let it sit there for about 6 hours before I go to work. It's slightly suspended above the tranny, so if the drips aren't coming from under the dizzy the paper will remain dry, but the tranny will get wet. I really wish I knew what it was. I'm gonna buy the O-ring that goes into the CTS just to be safe, it's only 4 bucks shipped, might as well.

Any other ideas? I'm panicking because I JUST flushed the whole system 3 times with distilled water and I like how clean it is.

 

Sometimes its easier to take stuff off to get to what you're doing.
