Turn your engine to TDC and the rotor should be pointing at #1 on the distributor. Then it will go clockwise 3,4,2
If it starts up and runs then you know you have it right. If it doesn't start then its wrong. Either way you won't blow up the engine

Firing order is 1,3,4,2 and what he said makes it easy to identify which post is #1. Rotor turns clockwise if you are looking directly at it.
In your case, the squarish part that is upright in HondaPartsHero's pick is probably pointing towards the front of the car (90 degree clockwise turn from what was pictured), which would mean your #1 is the back top post with #2 below it. #3 is the top front (radiator side) post and #4 is below #3 so bottom front post.
Ok update time. The first picture in this thread is NOT the correct set up formy civic. The picture right above is correct and showes where number 1 on the distributor is . Car starts now but now I have a new problem. When the car is running there isa cloud of white smoke coming out of the tail pipe. My guess is it is leftover oil in the plug well mixed with the carb cleaner I was using to blow it out. How do I get all that **** out?
I sprayed carb cleaner in the holes n turned the car over without plugs.. it sends oil/carb cleaner out of the holes but how do I get it bone dry? White smoke is wet like the smoke out of a dryer tube .. also water puddles on the ground by tailpipe

Both are showing the correct firing order. I guess some people like to make things harder than what they are.
#1 bottom left. #2 bottom right. #3 top left. #4 top right. Now check the timing. ALso puddling water? Sounds like blown headgasket.

White smoke is coolant. Blue smoke is oil. Black smoke is gas. End of story. If you have white smoke coming out of your exhaust, you have a damaged head gasket.
If it's a lot of oil it will be plumes of white/grey smoke that smells like burning oil. When it's only a little bit of oil like bad oil control rings or bad piston rings it's blue.
When I did my wet compression test it took almost 5 minutes (probably closer to 3 minutes but sure felt like 5 as I smoked out the neighborhood) to burn the oil off and it was massive amounts of white smoke. And I mean massive.
The puddles of water at your tail pipe is normal. Run the car and hold the rpm at 2000 rpm or so for 3 solid minutes and see if your cloud of smoke lessens. If after 5 minutes there is no change then you probably have a bad head gasket and it's burning coolant.
If the white smoke doesn't smell like burning oil and smells sweet then it's probably not the oil that dropped into the cylinder instead it's coolant.
The smell alone will tell you lots.

the white smoke and water puddles are gone.... it was leftover carb cleaner n oil that did not make it out if the chambers... blew it out again let it dry overnight and shes purring like a kitty
