So I have a 96 EJ8 with an obd1 "mini-me" d16zc block w/ d16z6 vtec head, wont pass emissions. So im looking to get some info on what the cheapest motors i could throw in to have a solid daily that will pass emissions. Its still got the original obd2 harness, not sure if its that hacked into or not. I'm located in tucson arizona and i dont think i have the experience to do it myself, so does anyone know of a reputable engine shop in the tucson area also? Thanks for any input

Your first question is clearly and completely answered in the FAQ's sticky. Your second question belongs in one of the regional subforums.

 

Swap out oil pump, crank sprocket, and lower timing cover for a Y7/Y8 unit.
Install crank sensor
Use Y8 EVAP components & fuel rail
Go back to OBD2
Leave the top timing cover off or rig it to fit.
Roll around with two dipsticks.

There might be something I left out, but that's probably a lot easier/cheaper than swapping an entire engine.
