Default Key question

My son bent one of my keys, how I have no idea but I know a locksmith and straighten it back out. It got me thinking, I know there is a chip inside the key, do the keys ever lose their codes? Is there a life expetancy with them?

If you get a replacement key from the dealer it should be plug and play provided you give them your vin as they will order a key that has the original immobilizer code embedded in it.

I fixed the key, my question was about the life of the chip inside the key.....do they fail and how long do they last?
