I am looking for Tig welder that does AC/DC. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I like to buy local from like General air... If you have a problem you can always take it back or deal with someone in person. usally when you buy a welder through them they give you a free small tank thats filled and they usally will give you a deal on a larger tank too.

Less than 1k, dual voltage, ac/dc it's hard to beat.

 

I had an everlast210ext. it lasted 3 months before it popped. I only had about 20 hours of welding on it.

before that I had a miller synchrowave 180sd. I bought it new in 2003, it is still laying beads with the current owner.

I replaced the Neverlast with a miller dynasty 200. expensive, but I know i'll never have an issue.

the new 210ext is completely different and made from a different factory but the old 210 did give me problems really only one and that was the high freq. not working on ac

 

Umm what? The new 210ext looks identical to the old one with a more refined display. I'm willing to bet they are still both made by the same manufacture JLT

 

unless they changed them in the past 12 months. the one I was using made a big pop sound and smoke came out the back of if as soon as I started an arc (in ac). this was in april 2013. I took it back and was given a replacement. the replacement did not function properly either. you couldn't change the save setting parameter. it was stuck on #1. I took that back and was provided a full refund.

I thought I was making a cost effective choice, but instead it was a lesson for me. fabricators who choose to use sub par tools and material will produce sub par results. if you want to be able to command a higher price you need to consistently produce a quality product. if your equipment goes down, that down time is expensive. if your material fails that reflects poorly on you and your work and your business will suffer.

If your your doing this for a hobby I see no problem getting a 2k machine, now going out and buying a 4k machine for a weekend project it's waste IMO

 

Check out the AHP welders. AHP, longevity, etc are all chinese makes. I have the AHP and it works perfectly fine for me. My neighbors are all boiler makers and pipe fitters and they have came and welded with my machine and say its good for what it is. nothing fancy, nothing extraoridinary or anything but it gets the job done.

Im still learning with it!

 

AHP is Everlast. Same company. It's the same as the longevity 200sx and a great beginner machine.

 

Awesome, thanks didnt know that. Their customer service is pretty spot-on too. I stripped all the threads out of my torch and called them to buy a new one, after explaining the situation they shipped out a new torch, hose, finger trigger and basic consumable kit for free.

 

Well I'm not too sure about that. Everlast has a terrible reputation for service. BBB rates them an F. The only way to get service is to smack talk on the web. Even some of my customers complain about 3-6 month wait for repair and replacements. But I have no personal experience with them so maybe they are trying to step it up a bit.

My first machine was a Lincoln 175 square wave. Pretty basic machine, but it did the job and was good for learning with. I paid $1100 for it used. As far as I'm concerned they're indestructible. I've done things with it that a person shouldn't over a long period of time and it just didn't care.

Now I have a HTP 221 and I don't think I would trade it for anything else. I think it's the same machine that Collin (Toxic Fab) uses. It works beautifully, the customer service is the best ever, and they have a 3 year no excuses warranty.

 

i just picked up a eastwood tig 200 it was on sale for 700. havent had a chance to set it up yet but the reiviews i read were good for a hobby/ weekend welder.

I purchased an eastwood tig 200 about 5 months ago. I haven't had a single problem with it so far. as much as I would of liked to get a better quality machine. I just couldn't take the hit and honestly buy something I couldn't afford. I think its a great machine to get your feet wet in tig welding.

 

is the footpedal a "must" or you can weld well (or allmost well) without it?

 

Pedal is a must on thin stuff, once the material heats up it become more challenging to keep a constant bead. But if you keep cool what ever your welding you can do with out a peal
