drum brakes have shoes.
they are almost half of a circle, kind of like if you are making a barbeque out of a 55 gallon drum, you turn it on its side, then cut it along the side, so it flips open. then you have two halves of one drum, these are the shoes.
Then fit the two halves inside a bigger drum....

imagine the two shoes are at opposite sides of the inside of the drum, then they are pushed to the sides of the drum, therefore applying a brake pressure to the drum, slowing it down thru friction.

Yes the rear drum brakes have pads.

Silmple drawing with key board.
((o)) Drum --> ((<--Pad -hub -> o Pad --> )) <--Drum

Once you hit the brakes or pull the e-brake cable it pushs the pads out against the drum.

((o))

( ( o ))

And puts friction on the drum it self stoping the car!

drum brakes are actuated by springs which push the shoes against the inside of the drum- as others have stated. Good thing about drum brakes is that it has a greater stopping surface than discs, enabling more pressure to apply. But the downside is that they heat up 10x's faster than discs. The efficiency is not there, but the stopping power is. A good disc brake setup will out brake an equivilent drum brake setup anyday.
