ok so i have a 92 si oem rear disk brakes i replaced the calipers a few years ago but when i turn the rotor its like the pads are so close to the rotor that it makes noise

also im trying to put the pads back on amd the caliper back on the rotor and the pads are so close together it wont even slide on the rotor am i doing something wrong? the pins are sliding fine

 

I'm guessing this is your first time replacing brakes?

Remove the cap from the brake fluid reservoir. Use a large C clamp to compress the brake caliper cylinder. Insert pads into the caliper. Remove the slider pins, re-lube, and re-install. Install the now loaded caliper over the disc, bolt it down to the slider. Reinstall the wheel, take the car off jack stands. Accelerate to 15 MPH, then slam on the brakes (without locking them up) three times. Done.

The rears don't compress like the fronts, they're threaded. The face of the piston has cross embossed into it. You have to turn the piston clockwise to retract it. You use one of these on a 3/8" ratchet, should be around $10 at most parts stores.

 

That thing is a pain in the *** to use

Makes compressing the piston so tedious since it keeps slipping off of one side as you turn the wrench

 

Uh, yeah, **** those things. I always just compress them with a clamp, never had any problems.

 

ok so moving the slider pins back and forth is not compressing and decompressing the piston?

 

No, not at all. The sliders are part of the bracket - the piston is part of the caliper.

could it be because i havnt driven it yet? i pressed the pedal a bunch of times.. the slider pins are moving good the push in and feel like they want to push out.. the thing that spins im not sure if thats moving at all i mean i used the tool and compressed it in but idk

Actually, I thought you shouldn't expose the brake fluid to air unnecessarily, as it's hygroscopic and can absorb moisture from the air. But, how long is "too long"?

The cap isn't "perfectly airtight" anyway, so it's constantly exposed to the air. The time it takes to properly do a brake job isn't going to do any real harm to the fluid.
