my car is 90 crx si, last couple months my speedometer cable has been making a spinning noise, thats real annoying, (sounds like a hamster running in a wheel)
and i tried lubing the end with graphite lube and it did'nt help anything, and since my car has 245,000 miles on it, the cable probably is going bad and needs to be replaced.
but i was thinking theres a possibility that the speedometer cable is'nt connected to the back of the cluster the right way ? so i wanted to make sure it is ?
i just pushed the plastic end of the cable towards the cluster til i felt it click, is that all you need to do to connect it ? or do you turn it to the right or left or anything else ? or could the plastic clip at the end of my cable be broken and not holding right ? cause i was messing with it a lot trying to pull it out with a flathead screwdriver and needlenose pliers?
just wanted to confirm how it connects so i know for sure i have it on right,
i also need to check if the end of the speedometer cable might of popped off on the transmission side ? if both ends are connected right, then i will end up getting a new one.

i checked both ends of the speedometer cable to see if it was connected right to the cluster and to the tranny, and i noticed the white plastic clip around the end of the speedometer cable that clips it into place on the cluster was broken off, i guess from messing with it too much, and pulling on it or prying with needlenose pliers,
and it seemed like it was connected good to the tranny, it was'nt loose or anything ?, i pressed it in good to make sure, but i guess i need to get a new cable now since the clip is broken that holds it to the cluster ? i will get a new one probably since they are pretty cheap, and put it in myself. cause i can't take anymore of that annoying noise its making !

They do this often, its just old and degrading.
I had the same thing, fixed mine with relubing, cant remembeer the product name but it sprays as a very thin liquid and after a few minutes sets up as a grease

You obviously don't have enough miles on yours if that is enough to bother you! Wait til the dash and the rear hatch start to squeak even more. My hampster speedo is drowned out from the squeaking dash and center console. You need to drive more. LOL

it has 246,000 miles on it, and no, its not perfect, i had a hatch squeek but the shim and electrical tape around the hook latch got rid of that, but sometimes theres a new squeek around the hatch here and there but not always, and i don't have squeeking in the dash luckily, might be cause i put duct tape behind where it touches so it does'nt rub and double-sided foam tape on certain places, but mostly i don't care if theres little squeeks here and there, cause its not a luxory car meant for being totally pefectly quiet, but the speedo is different cause i hear it right in front of me, and how it spins faster and slower due to what speed your going, so for some reason its more annoying i guess, but i could just keep it and be fine, but since its so cheap for a new one i already ordered another one, which should be here by now, i need to check for the package, cause it said estimated delivery date was today.
but yeah, i'm sure theres cars way worse than mine that make a ton of different noises, so i am lucky its nothing too bad, but its partly cause i get obsessed in trying to pinpoint every new sound i hear and fix it to get rid of it best i can.
but its true, i don't drive it often like most people, cause i've been unemployed a while, so i don't have a work schedule where i drive every single day, so lately i just use it for normal things, but i have had unstable employment history for a long time, so that has probably helped prevent my car from getting worse in the long run, lol
but good thing about unemployed is since i have more time, i've gotten tons of things crossed off my big list of stuff to do to my car, and learned a lot in the process, doing a lot things myself that i would of had a shop or mechanic probably do 10 yrs earlier, for example, just yesterday i finished my first head unit install, which i've never done before, and ended up doing it right and it worked, mine was stolen few years ago, so i had to figure out all that wire matching stuff since the thieves cut the harness on it, etc . . .

mine started making that noise, 10k miles later it broke. i got one from the junkyard but that one didn't last long. you can buy new ones from Honda.
