97 Civic EX - all belts came off while driving
Looked around and couldn't find any other situation likes this. Im driving down the highway and the battery might comes on so im guessin that's were the alternator belt fell off. Then I hear something under the car like it a big piece of metal fell off. I get to some slow traffic and while idling the rpms jump to 2000 then back down repeatedly about 6 times and then engine cuts off. When I look under the hood all 3 belts have come off track. I don't have a timing belt cover so yes I can see that has come loose as well.im going to buy all new belts water pump and timing belt cover lol. But I was just Curious if there is anything else that might need to be replaced or what would have caused this. Im fairly new to working on cars and just got this 97 civic ex to learn and put some real work into later. But if the valves are bent I guess I might as well get started on rebuilding the engine. My goal is around 400hp.
Did you lose the crank pulley bolt and crank key, or was it still attached to a piece of the crank?!?!?!?
My money's on the piece of metal being your crank pulley bolt bouncing down the road.

Didn't loosen it and im sure it is the bolt. The crank shaft pulley had a crack and a piece of it came off so I have to replace that for sure.this is my first time doing a repair this extensive im not sure what tools ill need to Complete this.
Im gonna start posting pics of what im doing later tonight and if anyone sees something im doing wrong or has Any advice on what all to check for please chime in.so far ive got a new crankshaft pulley coming in. Im gonna have to go to honda for the bolt and key? Not really sure what the key is.and for good measure I figure I should take the head off to check for bent valves. I didn't hear Any loud bangs so hopefully those are fine.

What motor? I have a few pulleys lying around, could let one go dirt cheap if it'll help ya. I'm not using em. I have a spare bolt and key too but the bolt is used and a lot of people say not to reuse em.
The bolt is gone for sure I didn't see the key.the pulley has a piece of metal chipped off.I already got all new belts though the ones other than the timing belt looked ok I thought.
Then you will need another crank key for sure. How bad is the crank pulley, thats why we need pictures. Don't want you putitng back a crank that doesn't look fitting.
I already ordered a brand new one so I def won't be using the old one.im doing a job right now won't be back to the car for another 5 hrs probably
What tony is saying is that you don't want to install a new crank pulley and metal key on a damaged crankshaft. Does the end of the crankshaft where the pulley sits look damaged?
Im not sure what a damaged one would look like or undamaged for that matter but I think it looks ok
Ill get them as soon as I get back to the car thanks for the help.sold my 350z bought this in hopes to make it faster then the z and pocket some cash.id hate to be in the hole too much just in repairs.
I just looked at the crankshaft and were the key goes is chipped on one side so im guessing that's not good.time for an engine swap to something with a little more power or just rebuild this d
