Default Thermal 3" Exhaust hook up

I have been trying to find some shots of the underside of an EF with a 3" Thermal R&D Turbo Exhaust installed. I cannot though. All the shots are of the axle back. I am trying to order some parts to weld up an adapter from my downpipe to the 3" Thermal B pipe.

Thanks!

P.S. Searched here and google, it's all the bling and none of the actual under body shots. I am trying to figure how long of a flex section I can get without modifying my downpipe.

No one has a shot of this at all? I guess I can try and call thermal and see if they have some specs for me. Maybe they can tell me what size cat their system is designed for, length at least. I'm looking at 18" possibly for the flex+adapter.

Did some research myself and I guess I'll just guestimate it.

https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/what-length-catalytic-converter-2015334/

Seems to be 15-"18.5" for a standard catalytic converter (16.5" calimed to be standard).

This picture sort of proves that the Thermal is shorter than stock headerback exhaust by the length of a cat.

I ordered a 8" flex pipe section. That should leave me enough on both sides for a reducer to fit the 3" Thermal Cat back. Should also leave me room on the other side for my downpipe to attach and run NA headers with a reducer if needed.

Thanks HT. Hope this helps more people while searching.

Are you positive that your downpipe ends at the exact same length as the factory header? When I installed my 3"thermal exhaust I bolted up the downpipe (3" with a flex pipe v-band flange) and hung the exhaust then measured the gap and made an adapter. One end with the flange thermal provides and the other with a v-band flange. I did it that way so I didnt have to worry about aligning the bolt holes of the exhaust with bolt holes on the downpipe. It's impossible to mock something like that up by looking at a picture, you'll have to put your hands on it.

How is the quality on the exhaust? Was it a reasonable cost as well?

Quality for Thermal products is always high. Price is usually $550-600 new for the 3" Exhaust.

This is a picture I found on google. I'm not fabricating anything until I get the exhaust hung. haha! I am going to make an adapter almsot exactly like you are doing. I was just ordering parts and I wanted to get the largest flex pipe portion (8"~10") and have enough space on both sides for a reducer, O2 bung, and flanges.

As far as my downpipe goes. I made it and it does end where the header ends. I did that for ease of installation. My exhaust will be here tomorrow and I'll probably do the fabrication next week as parts come in.

Excellent. Quality fabrication, perfect fitment, very nice exhaust note. I've had mine for several years and still love it.

The 3" Turbo back Thermal R&D exhaust DOES NOT bolt up to anything. It must be custom between the header and catback. Thermal does make a smaller exhaust that is a direct fit I believe. This is all hear/say from what I've read. Just FIY incase you do go with Thermal.

When you receive it take a picture and post here. If it doesnt come with a flange I will probably just go custom from a local shop. My setup will be N/A but H22's push a lot of air.

Well. I won't have it installed for 2 weeks probably. I ordered a reducer and flex pipe, ect. So I am waiting on that so I can weld up a piece to attach to my header. The thermal does have a nice 3" 3 bolt flange.

I got the exhaust in the mail. I spotted it when I came home for lunch.

Notice the ugly space between my bumper and the splash guard. Any tips to remedy that, I know it's off topic. That's the only thing about this body kit that really irks me. I couldn't care less about the rest of it 'looks' wise.

Pretty big boxes too. I'm about 6'2.

Shades to protect my identity and stick man to block my address.

Also off topic. This paint job is over a year old now. Aside from being dirty, it is still holding up pretty good.

I am hoping this will tone my car down actually. But I'm going for flex pipe, no cat.

im currently on vacation and recently did this...i have a b16 5bolt turbo on a crx.. went from a thermal 2.5 to the 3".. ordered a 3" downpipe as well.. complete 3"all the way and is not that loud at all which amazed me.. now the exhaust bolts up perfect.. my down pipe was the exact length as the other one i ordered.. the only space is from the downpipe to the exhaust and this is the exact size of a normal cat about 12" not including the flanges.. so yo can use a cat or test pipe or any 3" pipe really because the thermal has a 3bolt flange and the downpipe has a 2 bolt flange so either way its gonna have to get welded.. i am currently on vacation and cant send you pics of my setup.. good luck and pm me if u need any other help or info...

Thanks. I ordered a reducer. Sent me the wrong size. Got the right one in the mail now. Should work out this weekend if it arrives.

That's funny, I'm hoping to purchase this for my H2b when taxes come in.

Post up some pics of how it fits around the shifter. I'm running a crazy short shifter so I hope there is some clearance for it.

When you say reducer, do you mean 3" to 2.5"? Are you running a 3" downpipe? I'm not sure how to go about hooking a 3" exhaust up to a 2.5" collector.

Sort of exactly what I did. I could afford it pre-tax, but I like having some money in the bank incase something bad happens.

I will around the shifter. If I have to, I can refab my shifter and move it a little.

I am running a 2.5" downpipe. I am going from the 2.5" downpipe to a flex pipe, to a reducer, to a 3" flange, bolted to the 3" thermal exhaust.

There is a gap where a cat should be when you put this exhaust on a car. So your H-series header will not connect straight to it. So basically, you just take a 2.5" flange that mates to the H-series header. A flex pipe (optional, regular pipe works) and a 2.5" to 3" reducer and a 3" flange. Then you cut it to fit, the pipe that is. Weld it up, and bolt it together. At least, that's my plan.

I did it. It wasn't that hard.

Here we go. I put on my Thermal Exhaust this weekend. This is the 3" Turbo exhaust from Thermal. I'm pretty pleased with it. My welding, not so much. This is what happens when you are a novice and you take a 3 month break.

Jacked the car up, cut the current exhaust, and pulled it off of the car.

2.25" crushbent header back exhaust with flowmaster muffler for sale.

I needed some help to get the rubber grommets on the Thermal kit. The hangers are much larger.

Had to cut my bumper too. I'll clean this up eventually. Not sure how, but I will.

Painted it so there wasn't fiberglass exposed.

Hanging it was pretty easy.

Connected the B pipe

Hung it up

And here is my gap

Time to fabricate something.

Sizing it up, going to cut it. As you can see this piece slipped into the other. It makes for an easier weld. It also means it can adjust. So I cut it short and pulled the pipe out to get the exhaust size. I also rotated the flange to make it all match up while under the car.

Here it is after the test fit

Here it is on the car.

That's fully welded up. I gave it the old sound test and it doesn't sound like there are any large leaks. But I'm going to grind back the welds (to look for holes) and run them again just to be safe. I have a video, but I'll have to upload it another time and post it here.

All in all. I'm happy with it. I am taking it back off like I said. I have to paint it and install my O2 bung for my wideband.
