So last year we purchased a dyno and realized we'd need to do something about the venting system. The big issue we have is the dyno is located in the back of the shop and is not near the big garage door. We've looked into purchasing the black exhaust hose and running it up and out the roof but the issue is this will most likely fit 50% of the vehicles we tune.
We're open to any ideas, we thought about making an enclosed room but that won't work due to the space.

Bob, torrit/donaldson makes a lot of fume extraction products that will work well for you. Alternatively, you can convert old oil/gas furnaces into exhaust extractors by modifying the sheet metal and re-using the squirrel cage to turn into a big fan extractor. We did this for our cnc turning centers, worked like a champ and cost under $100. We mounted it to the ceiling and ran 6" flex ducts to each machine. Then you'd just run exhaust adapters to the flex. Send me an email if you need pics.

Thanks Adam , was looking for ideas like this or if people knew how strong of fans we might need. Ill shoot you an email tomorrow and get some pics of the layout

Sorry on the late response, been super busy. Not the best pic but I had none on my phone. You can see in the back the above ground dyno, and everything behind is in line.
we have an engine dyno, although a bit different due to having a secluded cement brick room, the exhaust is open on the engines and we simply use a large fan towards the rear of the dyno to pull up the gas, works very well and the vacuum force keeps the exhaust air out of the room.
for a chassis dyno, id imagine some sort of flex tube would work best, but a large fan would definitely have some benefit as for sucking that exhaust air out of the shop.

It wasn't on a dyno but I worked at a shop that put a hamster wheel type blower into the wall to pull air from a small paint booth (used foam to grab the paint before the motor) . . . could easily work for a dyno by hooking up flex hose to the tailpipe.

This was built from a oil furnace we pulled out of a building we were remodeling so it was effectively free. We just remounted the squirrel cage into a shortened version of the factory furnace box. We wired the motor taps to three switches to allow for different fan speeds. The bucket under it catches any fluid that comes out of the smoke as its being draw up. It discharges through a series filters out of the roof. I think we built it in about a half a day.

Adam I'm not sure how my landlord would feel about me doing something like that. Are you basically just reversing the motor polarity ?
Pro-SeriesFab this would work if we did a lot of rwd and the exhaust was racing the back of the wall.
The only thing I'm worried about with black tubing is it not fitting onto a lot of the exhaust systems we do, but I'm thinking if it was hooked up to a fan of some sort, even if it was around the exhaust, it would want to go up into the fan and out the roof.
We do have a small back door that we prop open and at one point we kept a large fan behind the car pointing at the door and that worked pretty well. I'm just thinking about winter time when we have all the doors closed.

Bob, we mounted it to the ceiling, but you could just as easily cap the top into an 8" duct and run it out the building. It's wired normally. It's a single phase motor so wiring it backwards won't do any good (and not needed). It's just pulling air in the intake and the entire top of the box is acting as a discharge. You could also do a TORIT setup, I just thinks its kinda overkill considering you arent pulling dust just fumes.

How heavy are the units, because if we didn't mount it up high, we'd have to move it every time we pull a car up or out. I could have it on a dolly and have a detachable piece coming from the roof.
Maybe 20-25lbs. You could hang it from the ceiling, but run a duct up to a stack if your concerned about modifying the building. The flex hose to the vehicle would be the way to go, just hook up and turn it on. If it gets damaged - who cares. Stuff is cheap. I was negotiating the price point for machine mounted units (about $3k a pop) when we came up with this. No issues now .. been running about 6 months daily. Really quiet.
Hey,
Post some pics of the area you want to exhaust, the idea of the fan from an air handler I have used in the past. I have ideas for mounting the unit, this is the reason I would like to see pics. You could use the up pipe from a ceiling mounted gas heater, if one is present.
Regards
Dave
