Default A little help with electrical diagnosis

So my batt was constantly dying after leaving car over night, so I had it checked and I was told the battery was bad and the alternator failed(volt reg failed). So I replaced both, but the guy @ Oreillys said the volt reg on the new alt failed as well. But, when he tested it on the bench and off the car, it put out enough volts to pass Oreillys bench test. I havent had any issues with the car yet (knock on wood), but I just trying to get ahead of this issue before it becomes a problem. Thoughts?

Try cleaning the connector which plugs into the back of the alternator with a can of electrical contact cleaner.

You might also have something drawing on the battery when the car is off.

Does the charging system warning light in the cluster turn on and stay on when you turn the key from off to ON(II) (engine OFF)?

What your saying is the the alternator is bad in your car but good on a bench test?

Bad grounds. Very simple idea, but hard to find most times.

Transmission, thermostat, valve cover. Check the big 3. Check the wire on the alternator too. Could be coming apart.

Definitely sounds like an issue with your grounds. If you want you can buy a dirt cheap set of extra grounding wires on eBay. They are supposed to smooth out electrical disturbances and increase electrical mobility. I got a megaraizin kit for like 40 bucks, and eventually i ditched the stabilizer it came with, but kept all the pretty blue ground wires.

Or you could rig up your own for a bit less, but it will take some effort. Just make sure to remove all your grounds, sand down the terminals and the chassis where they meet, and even replace the bolts with some nice 10mm chrome ones. It really does help.
