Default Info on replacing engine in 1997 Accord

Hi! I am new to the forum and new to Honda Accord. Purchased a 1997 in Aug 12 for my daughter, last week she tried to drive 239 miles with no coolant, she made it to mile 238 before cooking the engine. I believe 1994, 16 valve SOHC from 94 to 97 are the same engines. Question is will any of those years and series engine drop in the 97 with no changes.

And yes i have been searching the forum, but must not be very good as i have not found info i am looking for.

If you want a drop in engine where there are no wiring or component changes required. You need to stick to the 96-97 OBD2 Accord engines. Also you will want to stick to ether Non VTEC or VTEC whichever one is in her car now. There are two available engines for the 94-97 Accord, the 16v SOHC F22B1 VTEC and the 16v SOHC F22B2 non VTEC.

The 94-95 F22B1 and F22B2 are OBD1 engines and have a few sensor differences from the newer OBD2 versions. If you do end up with an older engine there are things that you can swap from your old engine in order to make it work. Just easier to stick with the same years is all.

Thanks for the info. The 97 has a 16 Valve SOHC, non Vtec 2.2L in it. I am looking at a 1994 with the same engine and possibly purchase to use the engine as a replacement.

If that is the case then you would have to convert the 94 from OBD1 to OBD2.

You will want to swap the following from your blown '97 onto the '94
• distributor and ignition coil
• oil pump housing w/the TDC & CKP sensors (hopefully the pump isn't burnt out)
• balance shaft and timing belt drive gears from the crankshaft

These are the components that make up the difference between the two motors. Without them the engine will not start.

If you don't want to do all that, then you will have to change the wiring in order to accommodate the '94 OBD1 style TDC & CKP sensors and distributor into your '97.

I'll be honest, it would be a lot less hassle if you could find another F22B2/6 out of a '96/'97 Accord or Odyssey. However, the '94/'95 can be done.
