New synchrotech trans, vss hole plugged, cant get mine out!
Hey guys, Im stumped what to do with my vss. I bought a new rebuilt trans from synchrotech for a crx si. When I recieved it, the axle holes and the vss hole is plugged. Like a 1" hole for the vss.
So Im looking at the Crx Si trans I pulled out, and there is a housing that I need to swap over but I cant see how to remove it. There is a little tab held down by a 10mm bolt but removing that does nothing to loosen the housing.
This is for a cable driven vss that is stock in a crx si
Im curious how I am supposed to handle this. Cheers!

Take out the 10mm hex head bolt and wiggle, rotate, and pull the speed sensor out. It comes out, and the only thing holding it is that bolt and 20+ years of being together.
I dont get how that bolt holds it though, the bolt and tab just butted up against the side of it, how would it hold it down?
I sprayed it with penetrate lube, see what happens i guess

The bolt holds the tab into a groove on the side of the "VSS".
It's a two piece design.
Most newer electronic VSS's are plastic and have the tab portion molded into the VSS to make it all one piece.
After removing the tab and screw, grab on to the stuck VSS with a set of channel locks.
It seems you don't care to keep the part so vice grips will work too.
Twist the VSS - there is an Oring seal that could have gummed up and is sticking it all together.

I do care about not damaging the VSS as I have to transplant it into the new trans.
You say it goes into a groove in the vss, mine definetely did not, the tab seemingly did nothing as it just butted up against the vss housing. Now Im thinking it may have split, and there is still the business end of that tab stuck in the housing.
I'll have to take a better look after work.
if it coes down to it, is the case hard to split to smack it out from the inside?

Getting into the trans to where you need to be to tap on the "VSS" would be a complete trans disassembly.
I would not even bother. The time spent compared to the cost of a used "VSS" (if you have to destroy the one that's in there) is just not worth it.
I stand corrected. There are sometimes two.
There is one up in the small cylinder of the unit which is used for inserting a clip to hold the speedo cable in place.

The other groove in the main body is where the holder plate sits.
Since you say you want to keep it, you should be safe to grab on to the body of the unit with a good set of pliers. Get them as close as you can to the transmission case.

It could be that the "VSS" in your trans is an older version.
The plate then just sits over the top of the VSS's main body to hold it into the trans.

I cant get it out, actually well, I bent it trying. Heated it up, gripped like superman with vicegrips and tried to hammer the grips upwards with a 3lb mallet. No budge. Ended up pulling the vss top piece of the vss off.
So I need to buy new or find one in a junkyard which is going to be TOUGH around here. Damnit

the same story happened to me last year, even with heating, the stock vss never went out
hope you find one fast in a junk yard. I think vss are the same on civic DX and SI, might be easier to find !!
