I have a 1997 Accord with 238K miles. I've owned it for a couple years and have never replaced the ATF nor do I have any records of the past 17 years of maintenance.I am not the original owner and it's had several over the years. I'm wanting to replace the ATF, and have been reading up on it in these forums. My main question is should I use HONDA brand or a generic? I have no idea what's been used in it all these years. Would it be worth it to get the good stuff or would generic suffice given its age and miles? Any help much appreciated!

 

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of thread on transmission fluids/OEM vs Generic/when to change it etc. Everyone has their own opinion.

Use the "Search" feature in the Accord forum and youll find all the info you need regarding ATF.

 

Yeah and I apologize for beating a dead horse but in all of the posts I read, the cars were either fairly new or midlife with the OP being the only owner. What are your recommendations for a high mileage vehicle that's had several owners?

 

As long as it is shifting fine and the fluid is not burnt then it should be okay to change. Only use Honda tranny fluid.
