99 Civic LX Power Steering Delete
Hey Guys. First of all im really sorry about posting this but ive been searching for literally days and i just cant find what im looking for.
I'm doing a conversion to my 99 Civic LX. Taking out powersteering and putting a manual rack. The reason is:
The rack i have now has a leak.
I'm running it without the belt and it wont pass inspection
So what is needed for this conversion.
I'm getting a brand new manual rack from a 99 CX hatch, but i feel like there is more for me to get.
If anyone knows please tell me, i need to get this done and over with.
Thanks.

You need the cx steering coupler as the input shaft on your manual rack is smaller. Other than that the rack bolts in the same and the bracket fits as well.
Have fun, getting my blown rack out was a pain, but I enjoy the manual steering for dd.

Another nice thing about manual rack is doing an alternator is a breaze, it actually fits between the motor and steering rack being the power steering metal hoses aren't in the way. No such luck with power steering 5th gens.
Ross: Im looking for weight savings, I love the feel of no powersteering. Even with just the belt off its easy for me to turn. I love working on cars so really I'm enjoying it even if it is 2x the work. So its upgrading the car in my eyes.
just FYI- the P/S rack from your LX has a quicker ratio than the CX, or any other trim level manual rack. Not sure what the inspector would think of a "de-powered" rack as opposed to a manual rack swap. however the feel and performance of a "de-powered" LX rack should be better than the CX manual rack.
sounds like you have the CX rack already, but don't toss that LX rack just yet! look up how to "de-power" a rack and consider it as an option for the future.

I've driven on de-powered racks and manual racks (my current one is manual). I have to say I preferred the true manual rack, though truly de-powering my other rack wasn't far behind if the preload is adjusted and the rack properly lubricated.
I've also driving with a de-powered an manual steering rack, and manual feels so much better. I don't know if its the same on 6th gens, but with 5th gens you need to replace the subframe as well, due to the thickness of the manual rack being smaller, so the mount doesn't fit properly from power to manual
My mount fit just fine to my EX subframe, fyi.
Unbolted power rack, reused the u-bracket and bolts, bolted manual rack back up into car. Swapped out the coupler for the steering column, then go driving.

im about to replace my old PS rack on my 99 civic hatch and thinking of doing the manual rack downgrade. Now would the manual rack work fine with the Si Tie rods, Si lower control arms, Si knuckle? Eventually i did an Si suspension upgrade on the car long time ago, but rack was the original PS rack on the car that didnt come from an Si. The Si rods fit fine on the non Si rack and from my understanding all i need to get is a manual rack and steering Joint B part?
