Default Is there any way to tell if a tranny is working?

I'm looking at buying a transmission off Craigslist for my 94 hatch and I need a Little help. It's an s20 y4f, I think it's the si model but if someone could verify that'd be great, and it looks really clean. My big concern though is that the transmission is junk and the gears are locked up or something. Is there anything I can do to see if it works or not, and Is there anything I should look for? Thanks in advance for any help on this

The transmission is on it's own and by the pics I see it might be drained. I'm more so curious as to know if there's anything I can manually turn or something that'll let me know if it's usable or not.

If possible pull the pan off and look at the transmission's condition, like for any metal shavings's and such.

There's a stamp next to the fill plug, if it says A000 it's not an Si trans. If it says B000 assuming it's an S20 it's an EX/Si trans. If it's an S40 and says B000 it's either an EX (good) or HX (bad)

If you can move the input shaft up and down the ISB is bad, if you can't it may still be bad but it hasn't blown apart yet. There's not a lot you can tell without opening it up.

There is no pan on a manual trans (or a Honda automatic for that matter)
