Default Need advice with 97 Civic HX - transmission, brakes, bushings

Last year we bought a 97 Civic HX automatic for our son. The transmission went and we discovered it won't be easy to find one for this model. It's a great car and had lots of work done to it. Is it possible or practical to look for a used engine and transmission? Before we can get it inspected we also need to do rear brakes and suspension bushings. We don’t want to just scrap it without getting something back on our investment. Any advice on how to do that?
You can email me at jvlebrun_jpj@yahoo.com
Thanks Horslvr

You can always go to hmotorsonline and look for an engine and transmission swap there.

You can find CVT transmissions for the HX at junkyards or JDM retailers as the other poster suggested. Last I checked, jdmenginescorp.com had some.

Bushings are time consuming and messy. Brakes are cheap. www.rockauto.com probably has both things.

Ebay has a plethora of cvt tranmissions. As of right now there are people who really do try to find HX because of the gas mileage it gets. Best thing to invest in is a tranny cooler and some good CVT transmission fluid. Do not use regular automatic transmission fluid, its not the same.

Thank you for your responses. We are leaning towards junking it and cutting our losses 
Our biggest concern is putting money into the car and then continuing to have things go. We are losing antifreeze and suspect it could be the head gasket. There are brackets in the back that are part of the suspension that are badly corroded and won’t pass inspection. Our local Honda dealer said it could be $1000 to fix.
The previous owner was a certified mechanic and really took care of the car, but our son really needs a reliable car sooner rather than later.
We can’t keep the car where it is. If there’s Honda lover in the NH area we would love to see it have a new home.

NH? New Hampshire, or the abbreviation for a city?

Too bad you're not close to chicago. I'd scoop it up.
